Not only the pay cut, but in order to continue the STRIKE, they would have had to tear up their current CBA which would have led to a lock-out next year.
That's why it was framed as a "boycott" initially, which is a lie of course because labor can't boycott legally, they can only strike.
If they had gone on strike for reasons outside of what their CBA would allow then it would have forced both the ownership and union's hands.
The players did NOT want to give up their CBA because a new one would have been like you say 30% worse from what they have now not to mention the entire 2021 year of no salary or play.
We were so close to seeing, unlike Epstein, the NBA kill itself.
