I'm betting the bullet entered the upper back at a downward angle and that's how it got in the liver. He was falling forward when shot.

That’s a good assessment. From the videos, the initial pistol shot was fired into the air so that’s doubtful it would hit the pedo.
I wonder if ballistic tests could make the determination.
