5'7" is pretty short, and he probably gave himself an inch or two.

People were shorter back then, even in America where we are taller people we have grown something like 2 inches on average over the past 200 years.

Nutrition does a lot. Look at South vs North Korea. Same gene stock, men 6" taller on average.

5' 7" was not short in that era. Modern nutrition has made us taller
