that also isn't how self defense works.

a convicted felon can defend himself with a firearm legally. He can be separately charged with illegal possession (if that was the case) but SCOTUS was clear on that

You're not going to forfeit your life in a self defense situation because you're not supposed to possess something. Oh shit go ahead and kill me, I'm not supposed to pick up this gun. Wouldn't want that on my record after I'm murdered.
