There're programs that let you build decks from any cards from any edition and play online. You just have to know the rules and not rely on the computer to do anything for you. So like playing normal. Set up laptops in the same room and call it close enough.
can anyone tell me the name of said programs, because my son plays this one where you have to win matches against the computer to earn cards, and I refused to play that shit because I don't want to play the computer for hours on end to collect virtual cards, I just want to build decks and test them out before I build them in RL.

Untap.in is a pretty good virtual tabletop.

I used to use cockatrice, but I think it got taken down. Dunno if you can still get it and just play it offline.
MTG Arena is actually really good and the computer enforces the rules of the cards.
