I think everyone's mom in the 1980s boiled or steamed them; they were awful! Now, I eat them constantly (oven baked is my standard procedure, though the bacon-grease version I'm reading in this thread is intriguing).
That fits my mom's approach to veggies and I thought for years after leaving home that I didn't like vegetables (I don't like Democrats, but that's another variety).
I do the pan-fry method in bacon grease, with bacon, and it is what turned my opinion on them.
