Way back in college I remember ... well, we read some epics from different spots around the world. The Iliad (Greece) the Ramayana (India) and Sundiata (Africa)
What I recall from Sundiata was that the Africans had an oral tradition, with a special story teller / wiseman known as a griot. The griot was like a living library of their culture. I'm not sure how much they had that was actually written down.
Probably part of the tragedy of the slave trade (among many) is a separation from these individuals that could provide the culture heritage. Well, I mean, wouldn't help much if it was written down either ....
