They beat him up pretty good when he was fleeing to the gas station. People like him are showing the world what kind of animals we're dealing with.
So they already beat him up, what's left but to take his life or permanently maim him? Beating him up wasn't enough.
I absolutely agree with you. They were pissed when he escaped into the gas station. They started smashing the windows and trying to get him out.
