Just woke up, and read about the Patriot Prayer member who was murdered last night. I've been hoping and praying that all the violence would start to wind down, but now I realize (finally) that its likely to only escalate and spread. As a widow with an adult disabled son, I feel like a sitting duck if violence ever comes to my area, so now I'm ready to to invest in some personal protection. My late husband was an abuser who used to threaten me with his guns all the time. When he died (26 years ago), I had the police confiscate his guns. Now I'm definitely wishing I'd kept them! I'm still terrified of guns, but I will be going to a gun shop this week. Any advice in advance of that would be appreciated. Thank you.

12gauge shotgun. Main thing is to fireproof your house. Replace glass windows with thicker material, escape ladders in separate rooms. Extinguishers and fireproof blankets.

I am going to go out on a limb and guess practice and range time arnt going to be your thing, also that you will wait until the problem gets very near to you before responding. To me that says a mossburg 590 shockwave would be ideal. Good luck finding one.

I pray you never need it but commend you for recognising it's better to have and not need than need and not have.

If you are in one of the free states, go to a gun range. We are always happy to give brain dumps about firearms and try to find out your needs and let you try some. The same is true for gun stores and pawn shops, except the try it out part.

Prepare to be overwhelmed with information we can only touch on here!

But be advised that guns and ammo are the new toilet paper of hoarders.

Thank you for the advice. I just hope I haven't waited too long to protect myself. I've been reading that there are gun and ammo shortages.

Get what you can. You more than likely have very limited options at your local shop

Yeah, I'm very worried I won't have many options. There have been lots of stories in the paper about gun and ammo shortages.

Yeah, i know it sucks, but just get what you can.

The best thing I can tell you for being terrified, you just need to practice. I always tell people it’s like a car, when you first start driving a car you’re terrified of the thing but the more you use it the more comfortable you get with it

Dont always trust the guy behind the counter as to size and "kick" when fired. I had a steel framed .45 that kicked less than a glock 9mm. That comes down to weight, construction, and materials used.

You're choices will be slim. But get a hand on everything you are interested in. Semi-auto while preferable in a self defense situation, may not be available. Revolvers are excellent in that there are rarely any failures with them.

Dont forget your ammunition, and be sure to read your instruction manual. And then dont be afraid to train with it. Remember, the gun should be feared, but only in a manner of respect. It is not capable of making decisions. It cannot hurt anyone if it is not manipulated to do so. It is people, whether through negligence or intent, that hurt others.

And happy shopping....oh and post pics on sunday......... nuthin better than brand new shiny metal

How big are you? A shotgun as has been recommended already is a great choice but if you are on the smaller side consider a 20 gauge or even a good 410. Then ask for defensive rounds.

I'm a strong sixty year old woman. Thank you for the advice.

You are welcome. Good fortune in finding the right shotgun!

Might need a good guard dog too, to wake you up when there is trouble.

I have a large blue great dane that scares the shit out of people. If that doesn't work, I carry a 2" .357 in my pants that keeps the boys company. In the bedroom, is a Mossberg 500 Tactical loaded with .00 Buck. In the car, Ruger P90 .45 ACP. Wife's car, LadySmith .38. You can never be too careful.
