The definition of "Professor" has changed a lot since I attended college

12
Loscann 12 points ago +12 / -0

I agree, " professors" are often not full professors ie tenured or protected. the press always says professor but most are the following

assistant : waiting for tenure and therefore fireable scared to screw up Adjunct / lecturer : part time non tenure or substitute totally fireable Research: typically masters or PhD student teaching for practice and to fill a shortcoming, sort of protected student lecturer unless they embarass the university

When I went, I had one professor who constantly bragged about how the reason for tenure was to protect them and allow them to teach subversive ideas. Tenure needs to go.

Indeed. For someone who got their MSc in 1991, and engaged in nothing but research since, he has an abysmal publication and citation record.

9
Bablonis 9 points ago +9 / -0

hahahahah - H-index 10 is not even a level of a postdoc. Not sure what research he was engaged in but apparently his impact is 0. What a tool.

idkfa [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Speaking of tools and publication records, 'member Kizzmekia Corbett who was made the leader of one of the COVID research teams at the NIH?
Well, prior to the Chinese Virus, she had an OK publication record with about 400 citations total.
Then a lab she worked in published a COVID paper, which now exploded with 1856 citations. The kicker? She's the third author, i.e. she did something... but it wasn't much.
Why the fuck was she made a COVID research team leader? Crickets.

So to summarize, now she's got a stellar H-index, fabulous citation record, and COVID research experience in a senior role. FFS.

Bablonis 2 points ago +2 / -0

remove this article [along with those where she was neither first nor last author] and her "h-index" is next to none.

1
Loscann 1 point ago +1 / -0

Authors are typically listed alphabetically when there are more than one and not aways by contribution, best to recheck , if alphabetic

1
idkfa [S] 1 point ago +1 / -0

No, not in biomedical papers anyways -- and not in this case either:
Wrapp, Wang, Corbett, Goldsmith, Hsieh, Abiona...

2
Loscann 2 points ago +2 / -0

Physics and engineeting co authors by spelling , otherwise they have to be listed as contrtibuting not authors and in the reference and apendix section at the end

2
idkfa [S] 2 points ago +2 / -0

Good to know, thanks. I suspect it is a lot harder to assess the contribution (unlike in biology/chemistry/medicine, where it is quite clear-cut).
CERN adds literally every employee as a co-author.

I thought eastern TN was free from this bullshit?

8
somethingnew 8 points ago +8 / -0

You can make sure it is, by contacting his employers and putting pressure on them. We might disagree with cancel culture, but we should fight fire with fire until the left stops using outrage to get people on the right fired.

4
aveydey 4 points ago +4 / -0

Great idea we should all do this.

3
idkfa [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

DONE! Sent an email to hr as he most definitely violated the UT Code of Conduct.
I will update when/if I hear back from them.

Thank you. I did the same.

Loscann 8 points ago +8 / -0

Yup Adjunct / Reaserch. Lowest level of professor, lowest pay hardest to promote if they were interested in making him tenure tracked he would have been hired as assistant professor. This also indicates he has no respectable scholarship or notable papers to his name to warrant a higher position... loser cant find work , so go to university and take adjunct .. Pay around 45k per year to start.. Thus continue to be bitter lefty....

5
idkfa [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

Spot on: $39K - $43K! 😂

6
Loscann 6 points ago +6 / -0

I turned down an adjunct while working on my PhD,, better to just be student lecturer , free tuition and 1k to 2k stipend per month cuts the student debt finished with only 10k in debt...already paid off

5
Bablonis 5 points ago +5 / -0

yes, you are correct [I overlooked this]. Adjunct is not even a professor. It is a semester-to-semester contract.

5
Bablonis 5 points ago +5 / -0

someone needs to send a letter to his department head. This idiot doesn't have a tenure and apparently is too stupid to realize that his "FB" hateful posts reflect badly on the university he is employed by. I am sure he will delete all his social media accounts instantaneously.

The_Peter 2 points ago +2 / -0

all Republican voters (or Brexit voters, or Putin/Bolsonaro/Orban supporters, it's all the same) are idiots.

I admire his nuanced worldview and measured response to people with differing opinions.

Republicans, Brexiteers, Putin etc. work the same way.

No list of enemy politicians is complete without Putin, (he's Russian BTW).

They lie all the time, constantly change their stories as their lies become exposed, and regularly sacrifice unpopular categories of people (gays, Blacks, immigrants) to stay afloat.

That bigot forgot Trans-Isalmic Women! REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

So they need a support base with (a) low intelligence, (b) no long-term memory, and (c) hate-based view of the world.

Now the projection starts...

You have to be remarkably stupid to believe that a small government can do its job better than a big one.

🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂

5
elsabio 5 points ago +5 / -0

He needs to look in a mirror.

5
idkfa [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

Lying comes to him naturally, it seems.
Here's his post about Kyle Rittenhouse:

idkfa [S] 4 points ago +4 / -0

Also speaking of legal immigration, he's an immigrant from Russia.
He lived and worked under the Soviet rule, and yet:

[you] have to be remarkably stupid to believe that a small government can do its job better than a big one

3
Bablonis 3 points ago +3 / -0

he is just an idiot.

3
idkfa [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Pretty much.
He is lamenting the recent passage of the "amendments" to Russian constitution -- while failing to understand this is pretty much exactly what democrats are planning to do to the US (mandatory COVID/BLM religion, single-party dictatorship, etc.).

3
Bablonis 3 points ago +3 / -0

I met quite a few folks like him [immigrants from former communist countries on soft-money academic positions with no tenure] - all of them keep saying how bad Russia are yet support literally the same shit they are supposedly hate here in the US. I am not really sure how to explain this.

3
idkfa [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

He's also a Jew that, well, to put it mildly, disapproves of Israel.

3
Bablonis 3 points ago +3 / -0

wow! A dude with nearly 0 impact on research has a page in WikiPedia.

3
idkfa [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Right? 😁
But he authored books! ... Which are not peer-reviewed and do not contain explicit literature references or supporting data 😂

3
idkfa [S] 3 points ago +3 / -0

Whoa, he's apparently against Marxism, and yet clueless as to what Trump supporters are vehemently against it as well...

Putin's job as a KGB agent in Germany in the 1980-s was to provide money, weapons and guidance to neo-Nazis and Marxist terrorists. https://web.archive.org/save/https://www.facebook.com/vladimir.dinets/posts/3043123482432575

Delusion of righteousness while doing evil is a hell of a drug.

TLDR: Putin hater believes lies about putin supporting republicans / trump and therfore projects and become the useful idiot he espouses to hate

Naturally, he favors riots as well:

Of course there are riots. If you have runaway income inequality, destroyed social support for the poor, and predatory oligarchy, this is the only possible outcome. Today people loot luxury stores, tomorrow they will burn billionaire mansions. And they will be right to do so.

From the comments section:

If I lost my job and had hungry children to take care of, I would resort to looting, too. Shops have insurance while a lot of unemployed people don't.

Those poor children hungry for a 60" TV and $300 sneakers! 🤡🌎
