This guy got fired from a government job for political speech not conducted in the workplace. He works for the government, not a private company. The first amendment applies directly in this case. The government can't elicit any punishment, including fines, fees or other actions which may chill free speech. That applies to employees of the government as well.

No protection at all for political opinion or affiliation. It needs to be added to the civil rights bill.

You would be very disturbed if you investigated the Software Industry. Get managed out quick if they hint that you are a Trump supporter. They even set it up and pay you off.
