MLK was an alleged wife-beater and philanderer. History is all a narrative. The man was not the character lionized in children's state-mandated curriculum.
I agree with you that it's in large part an ideological war and sectarian/racial conflict is used as a tool in that war, but I disagree that it has nothing to do with race. Race is not superficial, that is a lie. That doesn't mean black people are inherently bad, or white people are inherently good. But it does mean there are real differences between groups, as well as substantive disagreements about what society should look like, with no objective answers those differences will inevitably lead to conflict.
Culture is a product of group behavior and group behavior is a product of individual behavior. Individual behavior is largely a product of genetics. So much so that separated twins score as close to one another on behavioral tests as those raised under the same roof. That means that cultural differences will never be resolved as long as genetic differences are not resolved.
As far as black friends. I knew a black guy for 10 years, seemed like a great guy, denouncing immorality and injustice where he saw it. He often talked about his faith and jesus. And then he got together with some African friends who were making a killing scamming people, and he turned out to be a complete scumbag and a serial liar who would say anything to sound like a good person. He would probably pick your pockets while you were sleeping, and couldn't keep a story straight. I've met or have known a handful a black people in my life. I don't claim to have met many, but I've traveled around the world and met more than a few both from the US, other western countries and Africa. Every one of them which I knew sufficiently to make a character judgement, with the exception of one American woman, turned out to be abusers, womanizers, serial liars and none more intelligent than a mediocre middle-schooler and that's being exceptionally generous. Most of the black women I've met have been acting out a Jerry Springer set their entire lives. Conversely, the one outstanding black woman I met was intelligent, generous, kind, and basically everything you would want in a friend, neighbor, or fellow citizen. I would say she is genuinely a quality person, and I don't even need or care to know what her politics are. I'm not going to prop up mediocre black people as amazing if they're not, and I won't slam people who don't deserve it, but that's been my anecdotal experience.
My point is, the people I've met doesn't represent all black people, but yours don't either, and just because someone says they worship Jesus doesn't mean they're good people. A lot of times we look at friend's with rose colored glasses, and never get the opportunity to see their true nature.
Also, people regress to the mean. When hope filled blacks moved into white picket neighborhoods in Detroit, it often wasn't them who went around killing and raping people. They were the blacks who had economic mobility and were motivated and able to move into white neighborhoods. They weren't necessarily bad people, but Detroit has a murder rate 80 times higher than many modern cities because while they may have been fine people, many of their children were not.
IQ regresses to the mean, it doesn't trend towards extremes. Neil Degrasse Tyson in all likelihood will, despite being highly intelligent and distinguished in his field, have a child who is only modestly above average, and his grandchildren may very well be significantly below the US average.
Race is a complex topic because generalizations can absolutely be true, but many individuals can fall outside of generalizations and even if they don't, well meaning people tend to give those they personally know the benefit of the doubt. "He always seemed like such a nice guy, really friendly neighbor I had no idea he was rapin' and murdering everyone because he didn't rape ME" Rapists aren't always raping, and criminals don't stab everyone they meet or club every white guy they see walking alone, but sometimes they do. Bill Cosby seemed like a nice guy until he wasn't. Drugging white girls and raping them in private while being an upstanding moralist and friendly role model in public.
What I'll say is that you shouldn't judge a person based on their race, because people are individuals and not averages, and everyone at least deserves a chance. But when discussing social issues and populations, we need a more realistic and honest perspective of the issues facing cities if we are going to actually deal with the problem of crime, that is best in the long-run for both communities. I don't think you solve anything by pretending it doesn't exist, and 13/50+ definitely exists..

I’ll paraphrase an old Southern saying: The culcha will alway come out. I’m from Louisiana and know whereof I speak.
