Interesting thing happened in 2008 though. The housing crash forced a lot of people who were tempted out of the cities to move back in as it no longer made sense to rent an apartment 45 miles out from Chicago, for example.

The exurbs dried up fast and Whole Foods and Chilis moved into the city and took over where neighborhood bars and stores used to be. Now the exurbs are clawing back.
