I've followed Pompeo pretty closely because foreign policy has a big impact on my job. He's been Trump's best decision IMO. For a bucket of different reasons.
The CIA background skeeves me out but it was Trump who appointed him to that position. While he was in Congress Pompeo was the one who sniffed out that Obama was selectively declassifying Osama Bin Laden's communications to make it seem as if Al Qaeda was a dying organization, when the opposite was true. I have a feeling that's how he got the appointment.
If it makes you feel any better Pompeo is a member of the Tea Party and both NYT and WaPo have published op-eds calling him the Worst Secretary of State Ever.
