I think this is (unfortunately) common in familial abuse cases. There's a weird psychological process at work where the family member's sunconscious just can't accept that something so fucked up could be happening in their family.

There abused is also seen as a disruptor of the group equilibrium, so the group "pushes back" to maintain system equilibrium.

I've seen this happen in my own family.
