I was an Olympic-caliber (alternate to the 88 team) fencer in the 80's. Just about any mention in the media about fencing (and there were very few mentions at all) were about black fencers, particularly about a guy named Peter Westbrook.
The narrative was always "black succeeding in white man's sport"
And every few years, they find another black fencer, and profile him/her. Always the same narrative.
And recently, the only mention of fencing surrounds some black muslim chick (Hey, we gotta twofer here!) and the difficulties being a black female muslim chick in a "white man's" sport.
