I saw it on video. At first the crowd was friendly. Then they told the crowd they could not burn the dealership and they turned on him. One guy even starts saying, "their rifles only have blanks in them".
Then the crowd pushed a burning dumpster into the dealership and he put it out with a fire extinguisher. That is when the crowd turned on him and starting chasing him.
Couple of other fun facts: Before he was chased and assaulted physically, and right before the first person was shot, someone shot at him. That is also caught on tape and reported on in the media.
