The loss of 625K+ lives by Americans, from both sides, during the Civil War was a huge price to pay for preserving the Union. The South supplied 640K soldiers to the Union, which is more than they supplied to the Confederacy. I was recently surprised to learn this fact.
Of my Southern ancestors, 4 of them fought in the war, 3 of those fought for the Union. One was killed and one was wounded. They had brothers who fought. Three of these were killed. One was a POW until the end of the war.
My point being that our Union is worth preserving. Our ancestors certainly thought so.
