It depends on where you go, when, and how far. I spent less in DC on cabs than a buddy of mine did on Uber last year, since cab-company competition is fierce as fuck there.
Not shilling for the cabbies, but at least with cabs, the company is licensed and bonded, and it costs nearly the same (and often cheaper) nowadays.
That makes sense that it would be conditional on area. All I know is I got a cab one time in Atlanta and I paid like more than 60 dollars for the ride including tip and was in a hurry. This was when Uber and Lyft were relatively new options. I mapped the Uber after I arrived to compare the costs and it was considerably less.
I always thought if taxi companies were going to survive, then, they would need to get a little more competitive on price with Uber and Lyft. I know when demand exceeds supply of Uber drivers the rates definitely increase significantly. It would make sense that taxis may be more comparable in price now in order to stay competitive.
This reminds of that video, I don't know if it was official Trump or fan-made, where the 'Uber' driver helps out the guy stuck in the snow, but neckbeard cries wolf after seeing only the final chase as the car successfully rolls away.

My Lovely Wife was going to use Door Dash, food delivery service, and was shocked when I objected, she couldn't understand why I objected. I asked her who the driver worked for, who would be responsible for the food...? She thought it over and then realized there was no accountability, period, if food was tampered with or eaten.
Plus those people cut the lines at restaurants, I hate that. Get in line, you are not special.
