You say that but there are people wearing them, alone, in their cars, as they're driving around. There are way to many NPC's out there that have no free will of their own and do whatever the magic glowing boxes in their living room and pocket tell them to do.
There are already people wearing them in their own home. At least for zoom calls and such. And they make no pretense about it being nothing but security theater.
