I just moved to a VERY red state, and up until about 3-4 weeks ago, there were maybe half a dozen mask wearers in the whole grocery store.
Now there's 2-3 in the whole store without one on.
It took them 5 months, but they finally got to us.
It progressed steadily in Texas and up until Abbott ordered the statewide mandate, you could go into just about any store in my red county (except Costco) without a mask. Now, it's everywhere. I reject it all out and I just keep a neck gaiter handy if I need something in a store but even then, I wear it below my nose so I can breath.

Viruses mutate/change like crazy - because they are so tiny, and replicate very very quickly... they make lots of tiny genetic errors. Most errors do nothing or actually harm the virus. Some errors cause bad human outcomes.
