I met a cute girl yesterday with more tats than I'm into but attractive nonetheless. Then she turns her head a bit and I see big guaged (sp?) ears. She's gonna have nasty ears her whole life.
It's commonly called "gauged" but technically that's the wrong term too. They're just called "stretched" ears, so nothing fancy. Also, if a person is careful with how they do it and what size they go to, they can in fact take out the jewelery and the skin will shrink back to normal after a few months to a year. The rate depends on the person, skin quality, moisture, etc.
The general size that is considered the "point of no return" is a size zero, which I am right now and I won't be going above. It took me over 12 years to stretch mine. People can follow the rules and "rush" it to a zero in about two years if their skin allows. Some people need to do it slower just due to differences in skin. Slowly doing it reduces (or prevents entirely) scar tissue from each stretch. Scar tissue doesn't stretch or shrink, so if people stay under a certain size and don't do it quickly (and properly clean and moisturize the skin), then they can go back to normal holes for normal jewelry at any time. It's not a lifelong body modification if they actually research what it is, how to do it, and what point it does become irreversible.
My guess with a lot of these people is that they don't research it first and set a goal of having a frizbee in their ears asap.
