This is a direct result of the "everyone gets a trophy" because "everyone's a winner" culture. The helicopter/snowplow parents have irrevocably fucked up an entire generation of kids who have never known any amount of actual adversity or difficulty while growing up. Now they think that words are actually violence because they have never truly earned anything for themselves or worked a real job a day in their lives.
Always tell your children you love them, but also always be ready to tell your children "I love you...but I don't like what you are doing/thinking/saying at the moment". That and give them challenges -- or things that will challenge them objectively.
