TLDR; The authors of this NYT article want asymptomatic people to be tested. They praise everything else including masks, distancing etc.
We don't test asymptotic people for the flu. We aren't going to test people for MRSA or Hepatitis without symptoms either. We are at the point where this disease should be treated the same way.
The New York Times' position is like saying that everyone who walks into a doctor's office or clinic should be tested for AIDS every single time.
Walk into doctors office: "Hey doc, I have a fever, I'm nauseous, been throwing up with diarrhea and my whole body hurts"
Doc: "You likely have the flu, go home, rest, drink plenty of fluids, take Tylenol for fever as needed."
Walk into doctors office: "Hi, I feel fine, I have no symptoms of anything but may have been exposed to someone infected"
Doc: "Go home, stay away from others for a couple of weeks, keep any eye out for symptoms."
We don't test asymptomatic people because they don't have symptoms at all. In order to do what the NYT wants the literal entire US population would need to be tested. I imagine we'd get the results of that somewhere around November 4th.
That's a recipe for disaster when we still don't know what the false positive rate is.

They want asymptomatic people tested with the tests that show positives even if you arent infected at all.
Or hell, the fucking psychos could have been planning to slip in contaminated kits that show a negative at the time of testing but infect the testee to force outbreaks on demand.
Scary thing is with their panic after the CDC report the other day, the Left has actually reached this level of meltdown.
Absolutely this, even they aren’t using fake positive kits (which they are), testing asymptomatic people that have it pumps their scary COVID numbers up so they can use the numbers infected to morally guilt people into doing everything they want including wearing a face diaper and shutting down the world economy. Even though those people probably aren’t likely to actually spread it.
Bingo. There is 40% false negatives and 38% false positives with the testing so they want more false positives to muddy up the data
Do NOT get tested.
They want as many people yo be tested as possible because they know a lot of the test kits are so bogus they'll come up with false positives all the time and thus will always increase the number of cases indefinitely.
