Is mail-in voting legal to do for every state or not ? Obviously people are protesting its use, and I hear states using mail-in voting for the past primaries, but is mail-in voting permitted in the presidential election in November?

I thought Absentee ballots were the only other form of voting permitted ?

Is mail-in voting something that can be permitted on a state by state basis? Is there anything we can do - at a national level - that can prevent any form of mail-in voting to be permitted at a state level ?

I just don't understand how states can just decide to mail out ballots for people to fill in and call that permissible?

Do we protest mail-in voting at a state level? Do we protest mail-in voting at a national level ?

Is mail-in voting ALREADY permitted currently, or is this being PUSHED to be acceptable ?

What exactly IS the current status of mail-in voting for the November election ?

It's my understanding that each state determines their own rules in regards to how votes are cast. It's my understanding that a state could say that only mail in votes are permitted or only in person voting with ID is permitted. Then if people wish to challenge that process, someone from that state must sue in a state court and eventually it could be challenged in SCOTUS.

That said, I think it should be a priority in February next year to pass federal laws that do govern the voting process and make them uniform throughout the states. However, I think that would require a constitutional amendment. That is unless Article 1 Section 8 Clause 1 of the constitution can somehow be used. But even-though I have heard a few people float that Idea, I don't think that section will work because it's specifically about taxes. Although I think it could possibly be argued that doing so could be an act of "common defense and general welfare".
