I am not for this, but I think the arbitrary 10 year figure is comical.
The sex act is still illegal....the bill only addresses whether or not the offending party has to be automatically placed on a sex offender list. The law currently states that same sex offenders in this instance are automatically placed on the register, but opposite sex offenders are not. Why?
That said, don't do sex with kids....ever. The age of consent in California is 18 for EVERYONE.
Maybe it's to do with the propensity or frequency of same sex violations?

I suspect this one is coming from pressure from Hollywood. It's felt for a while we're on the verge of a big event in exposure of some the depraved acts of the hollywood elites, and this would save some from being on the registry - which would keep a director or producer from being anywhere near a set with minors, if they're on the Registry.
Remember, Dems always vote to cover/save their own asses, above all else. This is too specific to think it's anything but paid for legislature by some big influential group, who is at risk from being on the Registry.
People on the left have been LARPing about this for a while, there's a pattern, they push the boat out a few years prior to attempting what they want to do, trying to prime the population.
I think people in general are just highly resistant to this shit now, I think social media has been a double edge sword for them, it's undoing their propaganda faster than they can indoctrinate people with it.

Is there some limit depending on their age? I could see if it was a 25yo and a 17yo (I think AOC there's so 18), but the idea that 17yo could go molest an 8yo and not have to register is just insane.

Opposite sex couples having to register as a sec offender was removed years ago with the logic that the man would struggle to support the child.

In my area, there's a similar law (single law covering all sex) for +4 years. So a 17 and 20 year old are fine.

Yeah I think we can agree there's some wiggle room if you're turning 18 or whatever, but these laws aren't for that as far as I can tell.
The wiggle room you are talking about is already in place in the laws of many states. It is often refereed to as a "Romeo and Juliet" law. Romeo was older than Juliet. It's meant to protect high school seniors who fuck freshman. Often the age gap can be no more than say 3 years.
This basically extends that gap to a full decade. It's the slippery slope + moving the goal posts. Very scary.
