I heard it put like this. The economy is the dog walker. The dog is the stock market. Sometimes the dog goes this way or that and tugs at the economy, but ultimately the dog walker is in control and maintains the direction. Yes they are tied together via a leash but stock market doesn't control economy and really the economy doesn't control the stock market.
