WOW started out as an adventure, in 2004 you joined and had no clue what the fuck you were doing, you were just this low level noob running reports and errands for people, killing small predators. As you progressed you became a "hero", and it felt like your actions were solving problems. People in later level areas would be like "oh you yes, we need you, you've done all these things already and are clearly powerful!".
After Shadowlands this fall, they are scrapping all of that. Everyone will finish the starting areas, get to level 10, and then be asked by a time travelling midget which expansion they want to play. The entire world is all the same level (for the most part). So you can jump right into the Lich King expansion, where they all go "hey you're that hero from Outlands!" when you've never been to Outlands.
And that's why WoW is dying
they're going to kill it with the next expansion.
