I still don't understand why they put down an impenetrable layer of cardboard...

It's a known technique in market gardening for initiating new beds but they did it wrong.

  • Strip off the grass
  • Put down layer of cardboard
  • Add 18" of growing media (topsoil / woodchip / whatever)
  • Plant seedlings

The cardboard is supposed to suppress weeds and also provide some nutrients as it decays. Tbh we got better results by adding mulch instead. But we still add layers of cardboard to the compost.

I usually use this mesh stuff (forget what it's called), but you have to tear a hole in it for the plant to grow.

Yeah, I know the stuff.

We're exploring the Back to Eden woodchip method, it's working well in our climate.

What's with the whole 'allies' thing. Why should I have to explicitly call myself an 'ally' otherwise they just assume I'm working against them (regular ppl, commies can still get BTFO)?

It looks like a grave. Maybe they're growing toadstools.
