That's interesting and I believe both your points are true. My two crazy commie nieces both moved to Portland to "retire" in their twenties". It was actually in their thirties but they never grew up.
Sounds about right. Whenever I meet new neighbors they are here from blue states. And they always assume that I too am a liberal. So now when I meet someone new, I say "FYI I'm a conservative. I'm telling you this so you don't get too comfortable and shit all over the right then watch you cringe when I tell you I'm not like you."
I have that memorized, sadly. Have to say it often.
Sad... as a lifelong Portlander I see this in my future. I've moved from the city center, to halfway out, to the very far edge over the past 15 years as the city has turned into a bit of a shithole. I've got elderly parents who refuse to leave but once that responsibility ends... I'm out.
They live off mommy and daddy. Mommy and Daddy were great careerists. Terrible parents though. Also one of my "nieces" decided to marry a woman and then became a man. She's 36.
Sadly, mommy and daddy, massive environmentalist but never walk the walk, have come to the realization they will never have grand kids. Mommy is particularly broken up about this and swallows a bottle every night. I am polite when I see them at family events but I don't go out of my way for them. I have had enough lectures from them too about how I should live my life.
Edit: okay, honestly, they both have jobs in Portland but I strongly suspect their parents are "helping them out".

My sympathies. I know that's tough. You're in my prayers 'pede because I know there are some tough decisions in your future.
Hey Jack. Don't mean to interrupt your conversation, but did you find your truck?
Sorry. Had to ask. Love that movie.
By retire do you mean live off welfare? Cause they sound like that type
