Nope, always had the 30mm. The competitor in the A-X competition, the Northrop YA-9, had a Vulcan mounted while the Avenger was being developed, but both were intended from the start to mount a 30mm cannon.
Had to have the 30mm for the Depleted Uranium Rounds that specializes in being a can opener to EXTREMELY Heavily armored tanks. Some great video on seeing these rounds hit a tank, car, building, and my personal favorite, Fuel trucks unloading multiple armor units. And the HOG could take a beating and keep on HEATING.
I don't think so, IIRC the plane was designed around the gun. It's a huge gun, most of it is hidden in the nose where most other planes have radar. The rest of the USAF planes (with a couple of exceptions) have a 20mm six-barreled cannon with half as many rounds.
F-15’s and F-16’s use the M61A1 20mm. 2100 rounds a minute while the GAU-8 is something like 8,000 rounds a minute if I remember right. F-15’s you’d load 940HEI and set your rounds limiter switch to no limit. On 16’s the drum (where the ammo goes) would hold 500ish. Anyone who ever did anything with the gun on F-16’s knows the absolute joy of an aircraft that had the gun as an afterthought.
Actually, for the F-16, it wasn't an afterthought, but it's not a major system either. The ones on the F-4 Phantom II F-105 Thunderchief were literal afterthoughts because they were expecting to be able to rely entirely on missiles, then dogfights started happening and not at supersonic like the pencil pushers were expecting. The same-generation CF-105 Arrow would have sprouted one as well if it had been completed. GAU-8 ROF was selectable 2100 or 4200rpm IIRC and I thought the 20mm was 3000 or 6000, ima check... Nope, M61's usually 6000rpm non-selectable, but 4000rpm if it is (some are 4000rpm flat), and the newer M61A2 version goes up to 6600rpm. Remembered it right for the Avenger, but a newer version is locked at 3900rpm. I didn't remember the ammo capacity correctly, it's 1174 rounds, I thought it was 1400ish.
If the F-16 gun wasn’t an afterthought then why did they rearrange a fuel cell and make you have to remove the barrels, rotor, disassemble the element chute and remove the elements, all while straddling they goddamn drum trying not to drop the dog bone or the washers the entire time?
Trust me man, that gun on the16 was an afterthought. The 15 was just the gun, transfer unit, drum, and hi drive shaft, all nice and easy, in and out, no slack adjustment or anything.
As for the rate of fire, the USAF taught for years that the 20mm was 2100 rounds a minute and check out the rounds limiter, it exits/existed. 900 no limit for combat. IAW TO 1F-15C-33-1-2 or you could check the -50 series TO’s for the gun removal/install on the F-15. Sorry for no links, I’m just going off memory and it’s been a minute, I don’t even know if they have the T.O.’s available and accessed by civilians in electronic form, I haven’t thought about those things for years haha.
One hit from the GAU-8 would literally blow you to pieces - you'd be the Byford Dolphin guy. This thing often went through-and-through against Iraqi main battle tanks.
The hog is one of my favorite war planes. Can literally take missile strike and hundreds of rounds of 30mm and still fly. Has double redundant hydraulics with a manual mode on top of that. Got a titanium “tube” around the cock pit and is just loaded with bad ass.
