but it's not antitrust for censorship or anything period conservatives want you to be censored. the conservative establishment doesn't want uppity populists messing with their profi

we need antitrust lawsuits against Facebook Google Twitter and other big tech companies for meddling in the markets. they are how people share links now. like it or not parlor and gab and other stupid "alternatives" don't mean anything. they are not major social media companies. people share news on facebook. not parlor..

when Facebook censored some media outlets and props up others they are directly messing with the market and causing some news outlets to fail while others succeed.

40
getkek 40 points ago +40 / -0

That's a long way to simply say big social media needs to be classified as a publisher, not a platform.

7
permissible_missile 7 points ago +9 / -2

No, it's better to force them open (platform). Then make them follow the rules. No playing favorites. Common carrier.

5
Carry_Your_Name 5 points ago +5 / -0

They won't. They are bad people who don't play by the rules. Oh, sorry, allow me to rephrase: they are bad people who only play by their OWN rules. My place my rule, take it or leave it, that's their logic. Their sin is pretending to be a public platform when it has transformed into a publisher, and the transformation dramatically accelerated since Trump won. On top of that, they are a monopoly. They have a division that is assigned to detect and investigate any startups that may have potential and pose a threat to their business, then they will nip them in the bud.

The problem is this has been done a few times and it immediately turns to 100% shitposting, which Is funny and all, but guarantees the platform won’t attract moderate/regular everyday users.

Luckily the platform I’m building gives room for everyone to use the platform and not be bombarded with things they don’t want to see.

The left owns and runs all institutions: media, academics, church, Hollywood, publishing, Fortune 1,000 companies, major cities, music, social platforms, and other things.

When Google censors our messages, independents, slight leaning left, and young adults cannot hear our stories, values, and humor.

The right, b/c we own no institutes, see and hear both left and right messaging.

It has nothing to do with markets, it has a lot more to do with them having a near monopoly.

It would have been a whole lot easier a decade ago, too. Now Google and the intelligence apparatus have their fingers in everybody's pies, and Google has a ridiculous amount of money.

I can't imagine how hard it will be to find a judge that can't be blackmailed or bought off now.

2
EagleI 2 points ago +2 / -0

Amazon needs to be on the list for sure.

But Google is a major powerhouse. The biggest, baddest digital advertiser in the game. The number one browser AND search engine AND the number one video platform. They need to be trust busted ages ago. They're so large and corrupt they can impact our republic.

4

2
EagleI 2 points ago +2 / -0

3
Bramble 3 points ago +3 / -0

Trust busting was always great and I don't know why they stopped doing it. It was one of the most powerful and useful tools to ensure a healthy free market.

I actually do know why, because globalism and free trade meant that American companies needed to be bigger to compete internationally, meaning that they can't have domestic competition.

Google is far larger than that phone company

41
SeeFreeDJ 41 points ago +43 / -2

And that phone company has reacquired basically all their assets, as well as additional ones, and is bigger than they ever were.

49
ORD_to_SFO 49 points ago +49 / -0

The break up of AT&T was a huge deal when it happened, and it had an incredible impact on what eventually would happen. If AT&T wasn't broken up, there would be no Verizon. No Comcast. No Samsung. Apple would never have gotten into cellphones... and we might not have had cellphones for a few decades more! When AT&T was broken up, competition erupted, and the mid 90's was where telecommunications absolutely went wild with advancements and rolling out of tools & technology to feed the growing global demand for communication & the things that make communication work.

AT&T has merged with enough media companies now, that it is large again, but it's not about size...it's about monopolistic control, which is nothing like what they used to have. Back when 'Ma Bell was running things, you had two choices for telphones, beige or black, and that was literally it.

15
lowkeylocarb 15 points ago +15 / -0

They should turn google into a search engine utility for the US and seize all it's assets.

12
aaafirefly123 12 points ago +12 / -0

If it was about size, Disney should have been destroyed years ago.

1
mvrak 1 point ago +1 / -0

There is a rather precise formula by market sector.. it's about % control.

2
anikom15 2 points ago +3 / -1

This isn’t a fair description of the history. The breakup of AT&T led to a lot of problems, and probably slowed the adoption of cell phones in the US, not quickened it. The breakup also killed video calling technology until Facetime.

The current AT&T is also a different company from the original AT&T. Verizon is actually more directly related.

6
ORD_to_SFO 6 points ago +6 / -0

I disagree, man. AT&T owned all of the hard-line telephone infrastructure in the US. They had no incentive to push cell technology, and they didn't. You mention video calling...that was more of a "look what we can do!" than a viable tool that could be made available to the public. You seem to agree with me that Verizon is basically AT&T reincarnated, lol.

18
simpson5774 18 points ago +19 / -1

4
STEVE_HUFFMANS_BULL 4 points ago +4 / -0

Exactly. Just about the only way it could actually work is to give a command to delete all of the data and MILSPEC wipe it from the drives. Even that probably will fail because

  • I almost guarantee no one person has permissions to do that

  • if they’re even halfway competent, there’s offline backups that can just restore everything back to normal

Only something like “the DOJ has ordered Alphabet to be broken up under anti-trust laws. Their (and Google’s) board will personally report to Guantanamo and have all assets frozen if they do not cooperate” would make them listen

Luckily Trump is no god

40
IncredibleMrE1 40 points ago +42 / -2

The crack in Goolag's armor is the online advertising, and it looks like that is what the DOJ is targeting.

Alphabet was an obvious antitrust target. Through YouTube, Google search, Google Maps and a suite of online advertising products, consumers interact with the company nearly every time they search for information, watch a video, hail a ride, order delivery in an app or see an ad online.

22
james43552352345 22 points ago +23 / -1

Their ad business is also their cash cow so this will hit them hard. They have a lot of other businesses that just have massive losses.

16
deleted 16 points ago +16 / -0
22
FireannDireach 22 points ago +22 / -0

Not just YouTube. And, it wouldn't mean that AdSense would go away, just that it would be split off into a separate entity. A very wealthy one.

The point is, this would break their tracking abilities. So the nonsense of watching something on YouTube, and going to Amazon and them 'recommending" a related product would end.

Big Ad is throwing a collective tantrum today behind closed doors. I'm hearing it personally.

But, Alphabet sells all kinds of data, so they won't go out of business, and they'll just find other ways to do what they're doing now. But we'll have a moment's respite from the aggressive tracking they do.

4
RandomUzer 4 points ago +4 / -0

Just making them break the advertising bit off would hurt them massively. Almost all of the companies products that move the needle are based around advert rev. Even their browser is just one more way to hover up analytics into the cloud.

Maybe verizon can buy them when it is all said and done.

1
aaafirefly123 1 point ago +2 / -1

I feel bad for some of those YouTubers. Many of them (like Pewdiepie) are based, or just want to entertain people.

3
grapenuts 3 points ago +3 / -0

theres obviously demand, other platforms will come.

6
Sumsuch 6 points ago +6 / -0

There are a ton of other companies/individuals who would pounce on the opportunity to lap up Youtube's market share, and the competition would be extremely consumer friendly, like it was on the early internet.

6
IncredibleMrE1 6 points ago +6 / -0

That's a GOOD thing. The individual companies will shrink and have to fix their business models in order to survive, plus all kinds of competition will finally be able to enter the internet tech space.

2
aaafirefly123 2 points ago +2 / -0

Part of me wonders if the internet will always be in a cycle of a monopolizing and trust busting.

Like one company grows exponentially until it gets too big and the government steps in and breaks it up.

2
grapenuts 2 points ago +2 / -0

I get almost all my entertainment from youtube but you know what, ill live. Google and the rest of silicon valley are absolute cancers on this country.

1
spezisacuckold 1 point ago +2 / -1

I’m fine with that. We need competition. That market is in late stage capitalism. Incredibly unhealthy.

6
Kaarous 6 points ago +6 / -0

This is an understatement. AdWords is Google's ONLY profitable department. They are in the red in every other aspect of their company. Everything else they run at a loss for the same reasons newspapers run at a loss. Because the true value lies in manipulating the user base and controlling/censoring discourse.

5
IncredibleMrE1 5 points ago +5 / -0

Correct. This is kicking their strongest, if not only, leg out from under them. Forcing the money holes to separate into independent companies means they will shrink BIG-LEAGUE. MAGA tech entrepreneurs, your time has come.

2
siliconia 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yup, the advertising services should be decoupled from their other services and spun into an independent company. Same goes for anyone else who does the same, aka facebook for example.

8

NoStepeDePepe 17 points ago +18 / -1

Good. Then we can ban or force the sale of assets, just like tik tok.

7
FireannDireach 7 points ago +8 / -1

They can't move to China. Foreigners cannot own companies in China, they'd have to partner with an existing Chinese company to set up shop there, and they already tried that, and got burned, hard.

13
FireannDireach 13 points ago +13 / -0

Discord isn't related to, connected to, or invested in by Alphabet, unless it's silently through other entities. The most concerning investor in Discord is TenCent, ie. China. (Alphabet's investment division is called CapitalG, and they have no money in Discord)

Discord is it's own problem, they're quickly adopting the SJW model. They've, I've noticed, clamp down hard on anything non-gaming.

5
Minarchist_Manlet 5 points ago +5 / -0

A good example of how even if they break them up (a good thing), they won't stop censoring us.

About 2 months ago the discord server I was a part of and modded got nuked and every account deleted. It was official unofficial gavin mcinnes discord. We were about 2000+ strong and even used discord for a portion of gavin mcinnes' live show. I got the same email. It seemed unrelated to anything we had done. If you are a fan of gavin mcinnes you can head over to his .win or his site Censored.tv where you can find shows with Gavin, Milo, Loomer, and more.

Eh, let 'em fight over the poisons they picked. Smartphones are the biggest "heads I win tails you lose" thing ever. I will say that Apple is best for "out of the box" security and Android is easier to customize. (Although it takes some work, you can kick google to the curb.)

I got my Surface Duo preordered for next week, and an iPod for iMessage with family. I think I am set.

If you are running the standard ios/Android kernal, nefarious forces have access.

I use a Linux/BSD laptop for all serious work. But I do need a phone on the go: SMS, GPS, audiobooks and podcasts, etc. Why pay more than $30? Getting a fancy phone just means I'll be more tempted to use it for more things.

If you value your privacy. Like banking, health, etc...you’d invest into security - which isn’t cheap

Alphabet was an obvious antitrust target. Through YouTube, Google search, Google Maps and a suite of online advertising products, consumers interact with the company nearly every time they search for information, watch a video, hail a ride, order delivery in an app or see an ad online.

Looks like DOJ is going to target online advertising to force a break-up.

FireannDireach 8 points ago +9 / -1

Be interesting to see the fallout. AdSense has it's tentacles in everything online. The entire internet economy is propped up by it. Surgically excised from Google/Alphabet is kicking one of their legs out from under them. Even if they fail, this lets the Fed expose Alphabet's internals and gives them discovery. Which Alphabet will expend their Scrooge McDuck money vaults to fight.

Exactly. Make sure GEOTUS wins in November and then grab your popcorn.

Attorney General Bill Barr "overruled career lawyers who said they needed more time to build a strong case against one of the world’s wealthiest, most formidable technology companies."

LOL, great move Mr. Barr. I can't make a business decision without factoring in Google's products. They can literally bury any of my enterprises in nanoseconds through an AI algorithm designed to do what a human would do to put me out of business.

I can't build a damned web page without having to take into consideration what Google will do, and what they might do, and what they may change their mind on.

I have seen businesses built and then destroyed by their behavior.

For real context, Google has the power to unperson you. No one should have this power, it is a deployed weapon operating within the confines of the market. They are operating outside of the law.

"Some 40 lawyers working on a DOJ antitrust inquiry into Google parent Alphabet were reportedly told to wrap up their work by the end of this month."

"Some argued this summer in a memo that ran hundreds of pages that they could bring a strong case but needed more time."

40 lawyers? When did this start. Yet they had enough time to write a several hundred page memo to complain that they needed more time? How freaking long does this take? How inefficient could they be? The ones complaining are probably Rats trying to delay until after the election.

Dude. Antitrust trials can take years to litigate, and mountains, literal libraries of documents gathered and managed. For example, the anti-trust litigation against Microsoft started in 92, with investigation, and wasn't litigated until 2001.

And, for every lawyer on board, add in at least two paralegals for each one (if not more, I would say at least 10 for each one on a case this big), and all manner of support staff. A literal army of people are guaranteed working on this, past the 40 official lawyers assigned to it. Just having 40 lawyers alone is a big deal.

And, lawyers always ask for more time. Job security.

6
spez_this 6 points ago +6 / -0

Yes, antitrust trials can drag on for years. This is just the filing of the antitrust charges. I may be off here, but how long should that typically take? Seriously, I don't know but this just seems awfully long.

They're reminding the Communists running these companies that they will be left to hang if they don't meddle in the election.

3

Political Timing 101:

Right before the election =

The party in power expects the action to be popular with its base, so they do it just before the election and brag about it to voters.

Right after the election =

(a) Swamp rats want to delay an enforcement action in the hopes that the other guy will win and quietly drop the enforcement action so they and their swampy friends will skate.

OR

(b)The party in power is afraid the action will piss off it voting base. The best time time to do that is just after an election, so hopefully the voters will forgive or forget before the next election.

Came here to say that... "Within 9 weeks to be exact..."

1
GnosticAwakening 1 point ago +2 / -1

That is worrisome. Within weeks means up to 3, as opposed to within a month or a fortnight. That they didn't just say within THE month or by the end of the month makes it sound open ended.

The DOJ went after Microsoft in 2001 for abuse of monopolistic powers, and that was about the browser wars. That pales in comparison to what the current batch of tech giants are doing. It's 100x worst now. We are talking about stomping out free speech and influencing elections. I don't understand why it has taken so long. Get it done!

You should think about how little is said about this rather than this one article popping up. Crooks leak when it's good for them, and I haven't heard anything about an actual Google case since they announced they were looking into it a while back.

Nah. Now it's deposition and discovery time. This is a trial, if it gets to court. This could take a decade before it's settled/a judgement made.
