This isn’t a fair description of the history. The breakup of AT&T led to a lot of problems, and probably slowed the adoption of cell phones in the US, not quickened it. The breakup also killed video calling technology until Facetime.

The current AT&T is also a different company from the original AT&T. Verizon is actually more directly related.

I disagree, man. AT&T owned all of the hard-line telephone infrastructure in the US. They had no incentive to push cell technology, and they didn't. You mention video calling...that was more of a "look what we can do!" than a viable tool that could be made available to the public. You seem to agree with me that Verizon is basically AT&T reincarnated, lol.

Do you have any sources about that? Motorola and Bell Labs worked on developing cell phones together. After the break up, AT&T screwed up its entry into computing, for various reasons, and the money for Bell Labs dried up. Tons of research was killed.

You're agreeing with me. Motorola and Bell Laps DID develop cell phones AFTER the breakup. It would never have happened, if AT&T wasn't cracked open like an Easter egg.

Bell Labs did a lot of research following the breakup. If i'm not mistaken, they were a part of Lucent Technologies, and they were responsible for the massive outgrowth of communication tech that made the 90's possible.

Um all that research for the cell phone and computing and communications technologies was done in the 60s and 70s at Bell Labs pre-breakup. You really have no idea what you’re talking about. Most of the old guard was gone and Bell Labs was little more than a name by the time they were purchased by Lucent.
