Notice how the picture has his daughter holding a baseball bat but they leave that out of the descriptor.
I seriously doubt it was a shotgun, OP. Not that many shotguns are capable of firing dozens of rounds without prohibitively long reload times.

6+1 Rrounds average, with a 4 round extension... Not uncommon for 10-12 rounds.
Dozens on the other hand and you are looking at a rifle.
Now do we know if he fired dozens or he fired a couple and cops returned heavy fire.

If dozens of rounds were fired, it was not a shotgun. Even a mag fed semi-auto shotgun, would require 5-6 mag changes.
