It’s core curriculum in most universities, with maybe religious schools being the exception.

The "Catholic" universities are worse than the state schools from what I can tell.

If you major in engineering you don't need to deal with all the bullshit. Liberal arts is a completely different story

Yeah that's true. There is limited space for general education electives but won't surprise me if they force it
