An alternative to college could also be accelerated certificate programs. Want to be mechanical engineer, RN, accountant, etc? Two year program, tops, with all of the fat trimmed off. An engineer doesn't need intro to British Literature to learn why white people are the devil at UCLA.
How would people just entering the workforce be hired in that case? That's usually why people get degrees in order to get jobs.
