Most commonly the bayonet lug is on a fixed front sight post. I’m not aware of any other configuration that would allow you to mount a bayonet except if you had one that mounts to a picatinny rail.
Just looked it up you're completely correct! I own 3 AR's but none have A2 front sights and I never realized the sight and lug were an integrated unit.
