Modern conveniences just create modern problems.

Slower pace of life, community centered around family and neighbors, 100% organic food, and a horse you could call your own? I'd say those are all big wins.

9
Thrasymachus 9 points ago +9 / -0

Certainly easier to revolt back when the other side can't potentially call on firepower many orders of magnitude greater than what you can legally own--or possibly afford.

6
NvJohansson 6 points ago +6 / -0

Its also easier to revolt in smaller denser countries. America, Russia and even worse Canada, the population is so spread out it's hard to mobilize on a central area. When you see countries like England, Spain and France, the latter for example, the whole country of 70 million people can all be in Paris in like 6 hours while a Texan or someone from Vancouver would take a few days to drive to their capital... that changes a lot in the reaction time of the defending tyrannical forces when the people want to overthrow them. The element of surprise is gone.

6
ArtLife 6 points ago +6 / -0

A HUGE reason why the states should have remained fairly independent. And likely the same reason the swamp creatures made such concerted efforts to consolidate federal power and add the 17th amendment.

2
Scroon 2 points ago +2 / -0

Lack of speedy communication is actually an advantage here. Fast communication allows centralization of power whereas slow communication fosters decentralization and localization of power.

In the past, if enough of a community turned against their mayor, the mayor couldn't just instantly call in neighboring police forces and/or state/federal troops. By the time any kind of word got out, the old mayor would be gone, and a new local government established.

The smaller/denser countries advantage you mentioned is also an function of this. The reason why our big country (and big states) can have such centralized control is because of communication.

3
NvJohansson 3 points ago +3 / -0

6 hours to have a sector of population mobilized on one city is still fast and gives government very little time to react even in the age of internet and phones. Just look at 2014 when farmers descended on Paris and dumped 100s of tons of manure and rotting vegetables completely shutting down the city.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2822120/French-farmers-dump-hundreds-tonnes-manure-streets-spray-city-building-slurry-day-protest.html

But you're right though, in the 1700 when a village revolted against the mayor, prince or a local ruler, more often than not he was fucked... or guillotined.

1
Scroon 1 point ago +1 / -0

I think the take home lesson here is that in our age of communication, it takes a very large problem with very large mobilization to counter government response.

Smaller push back just get squashed by quickly alerted local forces.

Not completely true— any Texan can be in Austin in 6-8 hours— no biggie Texas time but very true on size comparison- Brewster county Texas is larger than the state of Rhode Island

1
NvJohansson 1 point ago +1 / -0

I was referring to the nation's capital, pretty much every European city you could be the nation's capital in a few hours no matter where you live in the country.

But yet Texas is pretty big, I got the scope of the size a big States and big provinces when I lived a few years in Montreal. My wife wanted to visit Gaspé in the north peninsula of the province. I should have done my homework before gladly accepting because after 9 hours l was saying are we there yet???

nautilus 4 points ago +4 / -0

They don't put one of each party on the ballot. They put whoever came in first and second place, which are almost always Dems. I was born in CA and I'll die in CA. Seen a lot of changes over the years. The vast majority of SF dwellers aren't from SF, or CA. When I start a job I like to count how many employees there were born in the area. Typically its less than 10%. So don't blame this on ME... the demographics suggest the blame should be placed on a shit-ton of outsiders that I don't recall inviting.

I will say I'm less sympathetic to a lot of gym owners.

I started off wanting to pay while the gym was closed, the money is insignificant; now I'm close to demanding no-fee cancellation of my membership out of principal.

Mine is forcing me to use their sketchy app, has shitty communication, and they've lied about when they're opening. They've been "allowed" to open for a while now.

3
ArtLife 3 points ago +3 / -0

that happened to us here, with Planet Fitness. everyone closed, and they weren't charging us, but then the mayor said okay you can open, but the new leftist CEO delayed the opening, supposedly to make it more "safe". So we got a membership at Baileys (which says you have to mask in the non-workout areas but they don't make you so we don't wear any). I had to send a certified letter to PF (and they were still closed!) to cancel and then they had the nerve to send me a bill for the cancellation fee, and I said hey- you broke the contract by not opening so screw you I ain't paying. I took the added step of having my bank reject any attempts by them to withdraw the monthly fee before I took the other steps.

If everyone just opened up their businesses all at once, there is nothing the Leftist Hitler's can do about it. Everyone knows there is absolutely no reason for businesses to be shuttered right now, NONE!

If they can all riot and loot without ever going to jail, businesses can be open and voters can go to the polls.

10% of my city voted for Trump. We try, but in the arena of discourse you have no clue what we're up against. It's wall to wall echo chamber delusion and willful ignorance, among an openly hostile population that is EXACTLY like every meme posted here and elsewhere. And as someone who went through the SFUSD public education system that left me blindly indoctrinated until 5 or 6 years ago, it is not easy for the best of us to find truth when it's so completely kept from view k-12, let alone for those not inclined to self reflection and thought for it's own sake.

I guess we deserve tyranny though.

Those who disagree with these 'obvious' positions are framed as sheltered racists beset by fundamental religious hypocrisy who are uneducated, unintelligent, and unwilling to have a reasonable conversation or consider any compromise. The utopia, as we are to conclude, is held back only by the conservatives holding back the progress of 'progressives'.

It's right there in the name.

Honestly, I think a point has been reached where something needs to happen. People have forgotten the founding principles of our country, and they haven't faced a mortal threat to their freedom for decades. If we don't get new, fresh leaders this year who are willing to carve out the cancer of MSM, social media, and wokeism, I don't think anyone will be able to stop the rising tide. We are literally the last bastion of free speech on Earth; only in America is free speech a natural right that our government has an obligation to protect. Other Western countries are "granted" their rights by the government. And they have caved. I'm not even being melodramatic when I say we could be living out the last days of relative freedom if we don't give this election everything we have.

The media and big tech are basically part of the deep state. They are un-elected, not transparent, and they hold a great deal of power. Even if Trump wins we'll still have the same MSNBC, CNN, FaceBook, Twitter, ect that we've always had.

11
50blessings 11 points ago +12 / -1

So then “no way” is what you’re saying. You believe CNN, MSNBC and the rest of PRAVDA is suddenly or even gradually going to have a “mea culpa” moment and join the side of America? Rob Reiner will vote Republican before that ever has a chance of happening.

3
ramennov 3 points ago +3 / -0

Or enough people learn to stop giving news media their attention, for whatever reason. We can’t count on media to stop lying, but we can possibly persuade others that news media companies today are not what they traditionally have been and that we need to update our attitudes toward them accordingly.

Dimslee in WA state has decreed a 4-phase, county by county approach. It’s been a complete mess. Always changing the rules. I believe my county is now in a modified phase, so phase 1.5. Dine-in theatres are bypassing this be reclassifying the business and claiming to be a restaurant. Gyms are converting to health and physical therapy centers to allow people to workout. Empty cafes and yoga studios are extending boundaries onto the shoulder of residential roads to somehow open up capacity and encourage business. It’s all so unnecessary. Just open up the economy.

All because some counties aren’t meeting the effectivity rate of 12 or less people per day which seems completely arbitrary.

Taps on forehead

They can’t close your gym if you make it a Republican campaign HQ.

Wouldn’t that be delicious?! No more Nancy. America wins!

RichardNixon 10 points ago +10 / -0

This is great news and I hope blue states keep doing this. West coast states will never flip to red because they are filled with people that are susceptible to propaganda. Not their fault, they were just born that way. BUT, those states also have swing congressional districts and I promise there are soft Democrats that have had it up to their eyebrows defending their party. (See republicans in 2008 after 8 years of GW for an example, that ended in a Democrat super majority)

Pure hypocrisy. If it weren’t for double standards Dems wouldn’t have any standards at all.

With friends like these, who needs enemies? Amiright?

When are people going to realize that we are the proletariat to these people. They don't view us as citizens, much less themselves as representatives of us. Sure every few years they spew out some benign platitudes to gain your vote, but that's it. The democrats are blocking aid to the American people, but opened up because of the USPS. That should tell you all you need to know, they are more concerned about stealing this election than the welfare of the people.

I'll say it again, THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT YOU.

9
Steel357 9 points ago +9 / -0

They'll get re-elected anyway. Leftists and Progressives have so much white-guilt, they love getting tread upon by their superiors.

Whoa, my gym was forced to close even after opening with a lower capacity, but the government gyms are allowed to stay open!?!!!?!?! Where's the CBS local affiliate on this story???? They did one on many private gyms that dared to open and, after the story aired, were forced to close down

Keep voting democrat

“It’s shocking, it’s infuriating,” Daniele Rabkin, of Crossfit Golden Gate, told a local NBC station. “Even though they’re getting exposed, there are no repercussions, no ramifications? It’s shocking.”

If you look up that crossfit gym, on their facebook they've made pro blm statements and came out against Glassman for his tweet

“It’s FLOYD-19,” Glassman wrote Saturday in response to a tweet from the University of Washington’s Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation calling racism and discrimination “critical public health issues.”

Wonder if they're learning yet

No shit. People are going to be pissed when they figure out the government has been paying themselves to go on strike.

I don't see the problem. It's a govt facility, not a small business, and we all know the Chyna Flu virus only targets small businesses.

I walked past a local gym (it was shutdown), and there were at least twenty viruses hanging out on the front step. The big one -- their leader I assume -- was smoking a cigarette and taunting passers by in broken english,....just being a straight up dick.

Welcome to California.

I have no sympathy for people who get what the voted for.

4
Jutts 4 points ago +4 / -0

Scum bags. I use a sauna at the local gym for life saving fluid removal and haven’t been able to do it since March. What a bunch of evil bastards. I’d be more forgiving if it wasn’t such a blatant hoax. I’m so done with these assholes.

4
ignorant_slob 4 points ago +4 / -0

I’m pretty convinced that California isn’t actually solid blue and a bunch of people just never vote because they assume it won’t matter.

At least I can say that at the Federal hospital I work at, our gym has been closed the entire pandemic.

It seems like the grossest abuses are coming from the state and local level government.
