You have some nice old ammo cans. Red one originally contained .50 M2 HMG cartridges, the green one was filled with M2 Armor Piercing ammo for the M1 Garand. Since Uncle Sam quit feeding Garands in the 60's, it's a safe bet these are probably WWII - Korean War vintage ammo cans.

Collectors love those things, so don't alter them!

Someone smarter than me will come along, but I’m pretty sure the side opening can is a 50 cal m2 can from world war ii or so.

At the bottom of the red box it says "Amm. Box Cal .50 M2" so that part definitely lines up. If it's WW2, that's pretty amazing.

Dear old dad would regale me with stories about buying Mausers by the barrel full, and the CMP having American m1s, stock GI 1911s going for $25 a pop.. it was a grand time for surplus.
