My grandpa told me that he was young, in the 1940s in central texas working the cotton fields, hispanics were considered whites. He said the all the whites worked on one side of the fields, the blacks on the other. People didn't really differentiate hispanics from whites. He said that didn't really start to happen until the 60s. At least here in this part of the country.

It only recently occurred to me that maybe it had something to do with the "party swap" and the civil rights movement and all the other bullshit going on around that time. Just another way to sow discord and carve people up into groups.

It was the Nixon administration that invented the term Hispanic for census reasons. It was meant to split the 'colored' block from blacks to decrease their voting power.

I heard this many years ago but don't remember where or how to verify it.
