They spent years subsidizing solar panels on people's houses, then the eco nuts passed legislation stating that when the solar panels generate enough electricity, the state has to turn off a powerplant in that region to "stop pollution". That night when the frigging sun goes down, if demand is high you don't have enough juice. Literally all the feds have to do is stop turning off the power plants during the day.

CeruleanShadow 38 points ago +38 / -0

2003, is that you?

I've found so-called "green" initiatives make things worse, because of all the red-tape, and because maintenance is made that much harder, whereas before, regulation tended to be common-sense.

(Random question: If you live close by to a hospital in CA, and they have rolling blackouts, would you lose power also? I seem to recall somewhere you wouldn't, because you were very close to a hospital).

Makes sense, thanks.

You know, back in '06, we had our own powercuts for a day. (Note: Where I live, our largest city is 1.3 million people). Was traced to a single corroded D-shackle shorting out two 220kV feeder lines, knocked out power to almost the entire city. That was fun, that was. Still had to go to classes though. We survived.

I've lived in CA for 3 decades. They always say this stuff but the majority of customers don't experience any outages. And if they are unlucky enough it usually doesn't last very long. The longest our power ever went out was because of local wind storms and stuff that knocked down old dying trees. Those always happened in the winter thank God.

I lived in a Chicago neighborhood for over 10 years and every single Summer, multiple times per summer, the power would go out for at least a day.

They were taking old 3-flats and rehabbing them into mini mansions. Once you fill that thing with top end appliances, giant TVs, and a/c, it draws much more power than 3 Little apartments. You get a dozen of those mini mansions built on a 100 year old power grid and it blows transformers left and right.

It was really annoying bc it’d always happen during a heatwave. That city is such a fuckin shithole.

Trust me, if those environmentalists were green, they would support Nuclear energy. They don't.

15
CeruleanShadow 15 points ago +15 / -0

Exactly, but everyone seems to think it is still 1986 when it comes to nuclear technology, it's a lot safer now.

19
Gaylordgangster69 19 points ago +19 / -0

Always has been safe. Even with the nuclear accidents, it still has one of the lowest death rates of all energy.

15
Anti_Immigration 15 points ago +15 / -0

Fukushima really fucked it up . I think the fact that it was so mismanaged is the problem. You look at all of these incidents and you see needless fuckery. Same with the gulf oil spill, caused because they wanted to save a few dollars by not properly testing their fail safe equipment.

8
fazaman 8 points ago +8 / -0

Here's the thing, though. All those accidents are because of "needless fuckery", as you put it. Now look at how California is managed. Now extrapolate that into how they'd manage a nuclear plant. Let's just say, I'm amazed the ones they have haven't exploded, yet (and I know they can't explode. That's how much I think they'd fuck it up)

2

It’s like that hilarious Reddit post celebrating the black kid for building his own pc. Like it was some monumental achievement.

Never mind we’ve all been quietly doing this for 30 years. My first build was in 1994. I was in jr high and YouTube didn’t exist to show you exactly what to do.

But I’m white so it’s not a big deal. It just took some reading and learning.

6
TruthyBrat 6 points ago +6 / -0

‘82 here. Bought a bare bones IBM-PC and added aftermarket floppy drives and RAM, lots cheaper than buying from IBM. The old Byte magazine was the reading.

Built several machines over the years, most notably the Celeron 300A overclocked to 450 MHz. Purpose - run DOOM! very well! IIRC that was a sub-$100 budget proc that gave you the performance of a several hundred dollar Pentium when overclocked.

1
1337hacker 1 point ago +1 / -0

That timeline doesn't jive, doom and doom2 were pre celeron, you sure you weren't thinking quake?

2
TruthyBrat 2 points ago +2 / -0

You’re probably right. We were still playing Doom! because not everyone had a new enough machine to do Quake. We were doing Saturday LAN parties about once a month in the training room. We’d all bring in our home gaming machines, put the tables in a circle with a hub in the center, and go to town for a few hours. Have Dominos deliver a bunch of pizza, talk shit as we shot each other up. It was great!

Hospital backup power isn't (or shouldn't be) connected to the general power grid. Their keeping things going won't help anyone nearby (and from the hospitals I've seen here and there, "nearby" isn't usually very near anyway).

As for regulations screwing things up, not just "green" initiatives. There are so many regs out there that make it almost literally impossible to upgrade old infrastructure and make it more efficient (often resulting in less pollution and waste), as regs disallow piecemeal upgrades as resources allow. You either have to spend massive amounts of cash to go all-in at one time (complete with plant downtime, since the workers generally can't do their jobs when the place is torn up for construction), or leave things as they are.

5
omegapede 5 points ago +5 / -0

WarViper1337 23 points ago +23 / -0

My favorite is the wind turbine graveyards. Check it out if you haven't seen them. They can't be recycled so they just bury them in enormous landfills. Green energy my ass.

12
grenades_and_ham 12 points ago +12 / -0

Yup, I know of a landfill in Abilene. The sales guy underbid the job and the landfill got flooded with them. They were coming in so fast they couldn't process them, so they began stacking them.

By process I mean chop them up with a 60 ton 836 compactor. Landfills sell airspace, so you need to remove the airspace from trash. Ideally you want higher densities per cubic yard which extend the life of the landfill.

With the turbines it takes a lot of processing (fuel, engine and man hours) to break the turbines down. It wasn't profitable for job.

14
Gaylordgangster69 14 points ago +14 / -0

They could reopen San Onofre. It costs way cheaper than demolishing it. All that really needs to be replaced are the turbines, and then you get a shit ton of cheap clean nuclear energy.

17
ProdigalPlaneswalker 17 points ago +17 / -0

All that really needs to be replaced are the

Democrats running the government.

1
Gaylordgangster69 1 point ago +1 / -0

Funny

13
Mr_Noh 13 points ago +13 / -0

But "cheap clean nuclear energy" isn't what they want, because that allows the proles to better afford making their own decisions.

In spite of the name, Progressives want to go back to feudal conditions, imagining themselves as the nobles commanding the faceless masses (never mind the historical reality that many nobles were just as much shoveling shit as the serfs, only they bought a title from the local head honcho to make themselves seem special).

5

GAGASays 1 point ago +1 / -0

This is happening everywhere.

The old school nuclear plants - the last generation that came online in the 70's and 80's... those were the last. Their operating licenses got extended but now we're into the twilight years for them. 2020, 2030 - they will start dropping like files now. 2020 was SO FAR into the future...now it's not.

And has their been a NEW nuclear reactor online in the USA since 1990? Since 2000? I really don't think so. Regulators and NIMBY have made it impossible. No political will or leadership.

You'll also have operators want to close them because they are expensive to operate and gas and coal is cheap. Well... that might all change in the future.

That was last fire season. This time it is high heat, smoke, and low wind which cranks up the AC, blocks the solar panels, and doesn't turn the wind turbines. They turn off the power lines when the wind is hgh.

That was spite and a manipulative play: PGE really legit deliberately refused to schedule or fund line crew intrastructure work for DECADES, created shell corp divisions to move BILLIONS in profits annually into and poof it off the books, corrupted the CPUC to crony favoritism vs protecting taxpayers, caused a number of severe and massively destructive fires from poorly maintained lines and transfer points, then said they were too broke to even trim trees let alone more so not their fault- and cut off power vindictively when they got told it WAS their responsibility.

A monopoly in fact if not on paper makes for a very bad utility model.

Funny enough - my power in AZ is being cut for 2 hours when they switch over to a new powerline in my area. I don't mind because it's being done during the coolest hours of the day (resetting all the clocks is the only annoyance) after our temperatures are scheduled to drop-off (mid-month).

But the real reason I don't mind is that it should save me 300 dollars from installing a surge protection unit on the central AC unit - which has seen it's fuseblock blow 2x in the last 10 years (once last month - guy replaced it in 25 minutes with zero wait since he was less than a mile from me). I thought I'd wait for a 3rd failure before springing for the optional unit - and I'm glad I did (because the line update should take care of that for more than a decade).

It's fire season in CA which has been one reason for new power management rules, and I suspect more AZ people are using our nukes to higher capacity where we sell spare capacity to southern CA. We've had over 55 days of higher than 110ºF temperatures this summer - but it's coming down now (starting Wednesday).

At least they have a non blue bubble friend...

Most of us here literally have no idea what reality is as no info outside the neolib narrative makes it into the darkblue bubbles.

I only realized with the 2016 elections- after 56 years in the matrix as it were. And I am exceedingly rare here to be a liberal and at the time Dem voter and have woken up. 😕

The cognitive dissonance rejection reaction to even small misaligning info and constant reinforcement of the narratives makes it almost impossible to break the propaganda lock.

Damn, as a millennial male, this is spot on. Even my brother is like that. He simply does not want to grow up and live in the real world. He would prefer to stay in his fantasy and resent anyone who deviates from it.

The culture of the west coast is absolute cancer. I have traveled and or lived in all the major urbanized regions there and it's truly bizarre how infantile people there are on average. At this point I have trouble relating to the very few friends I have left who are from there.

I'm from northern California, currently traveling in the real America (mid America) and looking to move. I've always been essentially far right my whole life I have to say that being from that hell hole has made me probably more extreme in my beliefs than people in most red states. There are some of us out there and there are red areas there in the mountains and rural areas. The sad truth though is that most people there are hopelessly brainwashed. Even my family who are conservatives seem very foreign to me at this point in terms of their views vs mine (I'm essentially a far right nationalist). I hope that all the craziness going on there can get more people to think the way I do and the state can be taken back but the reality is that a few million people absolutely will have to be deported for the state to ever have a chance at becoming a true American state again.

In Cali, there were told to shut down gas generators - since they are not green enough.

Also, told not to cut overgrowth forest and use it for timber - so now the criminal aliens set fires.

I like Nevada.

shellbeinjail346 5 points ago +5 / -0

Nevada has been turned either blue or purple, hard to tell exactly which right now, by the people leaving California. It still has relatively good gun laws (it's no Arizona though) but it's a ship that's quickly taking on water

They're finding out that "green" energy isn't sustainable. And it's not renewable.

It's not even Orange Man Bad. It's Human Bad. They're pushing the Global Warming hoax by letting their electricity infrastructure crumble so it seems like the end of the world.

Nevadan here. We’re not having blackouts, but with the recent heatwave, we’ve been getting a lot of messages along the lines of “please conserve power from 4 - 9 PM so we don’t have to resort to blackouts”. So we’re not necessarily the best comparison.

It's so that NV Energy can sell its grid power to California.

3
PropagandaWizard1984 3 points ago +3 / -0

Remember Enron? They were orchestrating power shortages to increase their profits in CA. California has a long history of manipulating it's own power grid to further their goals. I think they want to generate more discontent with the current grid so people vote in more money for green energy or whatever. It could also be for money who really knows?

And to think, you are paying an extra 70% than what other Americans pay for electricity too when you live there.

Tfw leftists blame PG&E for all the energy problems and claim that eliminating the privitization of energy would solve all our issues, despite the fact that government regulation has made it all but impossible to compete with PG&E, thus creating the issue they whine against

😁 California war on light pollution. We as humans have changed the intensity of the Universe with all our lights. California is taking the lead again, showing the world how it is done.

California power usage peaks at around 50,000 megawatts.

In 2013 they shut down and decommissioned San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station. It produced about 2,200 megawatts.

They plan to shut down and decommission Diablo Canyon nuclear power plant by 2024. It also produces about 2,200 megawatts.

The four gas-powered facilities are scheduled to shut down by Dec. 31, 2020 under a regulation requiring coastal power plants to stop using ocean water for cooling. (This will probably be delayed.)

34% of California's energy comes from natural gas-fired power plants, which California is actively trying to eliminate.

Environmental regulation. The big reason is the San Onofre plant got closed, but the real problem was that no one ever bothered to replace those lost GW. Yes, it's as simple as basis addition and subtraction that was never part of the management of the power grid. There is not enough power to supply the state if everyone is on the grid at the same time. It's no different than frying a breaker in a room because you're using too much power, all you need is a few new sockets under a different power source. They do not want to build new power plants because the green boys keep telling them prince Al Gore said not to.

Meanwhile in Ohio when he hit ~105° in 2012 for a week straight the worst that happened was “You might lose power for an hour or two because y’all keep trying to keep your houses at 68° when it’s nearly 40° hotter outside.”
