Something like 70+ percent of the population is actually deficient in vitamin D, it's quite problematic, especially so for black people. Vitamin D and B12 should be supplemented by everyone regardless of diet.

vitamin d deficiencies is a lot of the reason blacks get sickle cell.

I know I'm deficient. I get prescribed vitamin D every time I get bloodwork done.

You can take it prophylactically without fear. 2000IU/day is a good starting point and if you live someplace where it doesn't get too sunny, you can take 5,000IU/day.
