I was curious, so I checked out use of the word with the google (sorry) Ngram viewer. It was used in print about half as often in the early 70s as it is today, so it wouldn't be out of the question.
"Poontang" is apparently attested as early as the 1920s in the US. Theories are that it's from New Orleans French (putain- whore) or from a SE Asian language via the Philippines (a US territory/commonwealth in the early 20th century) .
