FYI PEDES:

"Another study found that 30 minutes of midday summer sun exposure in Oslo, Norway was equivalent to consuming 10,000–20,000 IU of vitamin D " - Heathline

covfefeforever 9 points ago +9 / -0

Fuck Oslo! How many IUs in the tool ol USA baby?

4
Granny 4 points ago +4 / -0

Just happened to be the first data I encountered. Sure it's the same everywhere.

5
pray4peace4 5 points ago +5 / -0

it varies with latitude. The closer to the equator, the more D your body produces per unit of time.

4
Granny 4 points ago +4 / -0

That sounds logical; in any case, Mother Nature obviously intended us to have a great deal of vitamin D!

Vitamin D absorption is greatly modified by the pigmentation of skin. In other words, blacks and those with darker skin pigmentations need more sunlight to absorb a similar amount of vitamin D. And don't get mad at me for saying it, I'm a black person. It's not a racist statement. It's simply a fact.

1
Granny 1 point ago +1 / -0

Yes that's true. I was only trying to make the point that a large amount of vitamin D is not harmful. Now if a white person, wearing a bikini, at the equator, at 12 noon, went outside for an hour, they'd get some massive amounts of vitamin D naturally! Probably burn their skin off too, but oh well.

High doses of Vitamin D are prescribed only to patients who have a deficiency bad enough to cause symptoms. The 50,000 IU cannot safely be taken for more than a month without toxicity. The liver & fat tissues will store up most of the excess during this treatment & release it as needed during the year. 20 minutes in the sun in the USA will produce 20,000 IU of D3. While a person can OD on D in pill form , they cannot OD on it if it's produced by your skin.

2
whippeat 2 points ago +2 / -0

Time in the sun depends on UV index, which depends on time of day, cloud cover and your location. Obviously clothing and sunscreen are factors too. In many places, there are months on end with insufficient UV to induce vitamin D synthesis.

It’s why 70+ percent of people are insufficient or deficient.

6
FireannDireach 6 points ago +6 / -0

Depends on the pill. I take soft gels that are 1500 IU. I've taken two a day for years, sometimes 3 in the beginning of the normal flu season.

1
BoughtByBloomberg2 1 point ago +1 / -0

it also requires consitent and long term use. As pills of 100'000 IU are routinely given to patients once every few months to build up a reserve.

Takes a very long time for that to happen. Depending on dosage. I’ve taken 15000 iu a day for over year and never came close to reaching a toxic level.

1
covfefeforever 1 point ago +1 / -0

Why take so much? You in Alaska?

7
Myzlplix 7 points ago +7 / -0

haha, no I live in Arizona. Most people in AZ have a vitamin D deficiency due to either very limitied outdoor activity, or sunscreen use if they are outside. In my case no parts of my body are exposed to the sun. I work outside all day and I wear jeans, boots and a long sleeve shirt and a shemagh. The sun is very uncomfortable here and sun sickness sucks. But anyway the reason I take so much is because its important to get blood levels up quickly but vitamin D is slow to replenish. My vitamin D levels are always low because I don't always supplement so when winter comes, I'm low D and have weakened lung function I get an acute bronchial infection, borderline pneumonia. Supplementing Vitamin D keeps me from getting that infection.

I eat 12 McDonald’s chicken nuggets a day (sometimes I get the hot and spicy mcchickens if I’m feelin spicy) and go for 1-2 hr bike rides in the sun a day and drink water and tea. Sometimes I’ll get a milkshake or some ice cream if I need a sugar rush. Other than that, I sleep 3-4 hrs a night, read a book a week, and pretty much have all the energy in the world.

To relate to your story, I used to take a multi too and I literally went to the doctor cause I was so fatigued all the time. All my bloodwork (including testosterone) was completely fine. So like you, I ran out and was like “well these obvi aren’t working” and next thing you know, I got a promotion at work, I’m recovering from my surgery at lightning speeds and I feel stronger than ever.

Edit:I don’t know what the downvotes are for lol but whatever.

? Shoulder surgery back in June. I was supposed to be in a sling for 3 months. Out and exercising in 2. Literally just hit my 3 months mark 2 days ago and although my muscle isn’t back to normal, my range of motion is almost all the way back and the muscle is coming

I’m sure this has nothing to do with vitamins lol more so will power and exercise and refusing to be a cripple. Maybe not “lightning” speeds but every doctor I meet is shocked at my progress.

4

Idk who downvoted you lol but it wasn’t me! And thank you! What makes it even more impressive is it was a labrum repair that was only supposed to take an hour or 2 max. Mine took 6 hours and I have 8 drill holes in my shoulder cause he said I had no labrum left “it looked like a bomb went off in there”. Said it was the worst shoulder he’s seen all year and top 10 in his career. This is a guy who works on professional athletes mind you. The muscle is the only thing that’s taking a while cause it’s still so scarred up from being sliced open in 8 spots lol. But I’m getting there!!! Started riding my bicycle again last week and I wanna get back on my motorcycle so bad but I know that’s still a bad idea lol

Can’t help with the legal psychiatry unfortunately, but reading helps me. I’m depressed and autistic as fuck all the time. The only thing that helps me is pretending the world is a video game/playground. And like any video game, you need to know the rules and read the directions to do better. So I read (past tense) a lot of self help books which helped me fake being happy so people wouldn’t be turned off by my nonsense. Then I read (also past tense) leadership books because I was doing really well with people so I wanted to control them. Now I read (present) finance books so I can make more and more money because idgaf what anyone says, money can buy a lot of happiness. And none of what I accomplish makes me happy honestly, but the process (and payoffs) does. Just doing something every day makes me forget depression and anxiety. Even if it’s spending the whole day just cleaning the bathroom, being productive is the key. To each his own obviously, I don’t know if any of that helps but I hope you find your purpose mate. It’s definitely a struggle, but know you’re not alone.

And idk what your situation is obviously, but move as soon as you can. Cuomo will murder you and your grandma if he can

Most people should be taking vitamin d daily regardless. My grandmother had a serious chemical imbalance involving vitamin d. Took the doctors years to finally figure it out, and it wrecked havoc on her. Also fights depression!

11
WreckEm 11 points ago +11 / -0

Totally. Maybe I had depression but never recognized it. I felt a pressure in my head, not really physical but pressure is the best description. Started taking vitamin D and tanning in the summer (all over). It actually makes a difference if you fully tan. Your skin needs broad sun exposure to work well. But don't over do it and burn

Plant based foods are usually k1.

K2, which the above post referred to, is usually meat based foods and some fermented foods.

Liver, chicken, grass fed beef, egg yolks, and cheeses seem to be good sources from what I can find. Natto (fermented soybeans) is apparently a very good source as well but it's mk-7 instead of mk-4, not sure if that makes a different or not. Same with sauerkraut.

1
ryvrdrgn14 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thanks. The problem with nutritional websites is they just generalize which vitamins can be found in the food. I do lots of kimchi, so is that good enough?

2
Continue 2 points ago +2 / -0

Unfortunately I'm not completely sure, it's much tougher to find good info on k2 than k1. Sauerkraut k2 values are fairly low, so it's possible kimchi is pretty low as well. The one thing that seems consistent is natto is way more than everything else (like 100x), though that's mainly a Japanese thing.

It is also available as a supplement, often packaged with vitamin d3. On the off chance you're vegetarian it would probably be a good idea, otherwise I can't say for sure whether it would be beneficial, but something like 100 mcg every other day probably wouldn't hurt either.

That's kind of how a lot of supplements go though, unless you're completely deficient it can be tough to tell whether or not they're providing some benefit or not doing much, and there's often no generally agreed on scientific consensus, whatever that's worth.

2
ryvrdrgn14 2 points ago +2 / -0

Thanks anyway! It's alright, I eat quite a bit of meat so it shouldn't be a problem. I do think that a lot of nutritional information is either censored or altered so that we keep getting sick and buying big Pharma pills.

It makes it very difficult for the average person to know what the hell is happening. People get sick and don't know that a change in diet can solve most everything. It's pretty sad.

I get the excitement and not to rain on the parade but article says:

"The intervention group received calcifediol, which is a type of vitamin D found in the blood. It is not the usual type of vitamin D found in supplements. "

https://covid.us.org/2020/09/03/new-study-vitamin-d-reduces-risk-of-icu-admission-97/

Fourth paragraph down

1
Miserable_company 1 point ago +1 / -0

There is now enough evidence for treatment with calcifediol, also known as 25(OH)D, to be STANDARD CARE for hospitalized patients with Covid-19. There is enough evidence for vitamin D supplementation to be recommended to everyone at risk of vitamin D, especially those at high risk. And since the elderly often have difficulty absorbing vitamin D, they should receive a higher dosage.

Every adult should take 10,000 IU of vitamin D per day, except the elderly, who should take twice that amount — 20,000 IU/day — due to their greater risk of dying from Covid and their lower absorption of vitamin D.

The amount of health conditions related to vitamin D deficiency is incredible when you begin to look into it. I used to get the flu both summer and winter, until I started taking supplements. I take 5k IUs every day in the summer months, and 10k in the winter. Barely even get a cold these days. We spend most of our days indoors or in cars, and when we're outside we use clothing and sunscreen to protect ourselves from the sun. If you have some chronic diseases you should look into whether or not it has a link to vitamin D deficiency and get tested. And even if you don't, having an optimal D-level is only beneficial.

3
Kekbewithus 3 points ago +3 / -0

The FDA recommended value is 400 IU of vitamin D per day.

20-30 minutes of noonday sun exposure produces upwards of 20,000 IU naturally in the body.

Your body produces more Vitamin D in one minute than the FDA recommends per day, total BS.

Probably Fauci and friends developed those horrible recommendations, why should anyone trust the CDC, FDA, or any of those agencies at this point when it comes to personal health?

Note: it’s easier and safer to get vitamin D naturally from 15 minutes of sunshine than to take supplements.

2
Seeker_of_Firecrotch 2 points ago +2 / -0

My doctor told me the body’s trunk is what needs exposure (versus arms/legs) and to wear a speedo outside around noon.

I asked her if she’d be posting my bail then.

2

5,000 iu/day is a good place to start.

You can search “Dr Rhonda Patrick Goes in Depth on Vitamin D Joe Rogan” and you see a good 28 minute segment on how Vit D works, why it’s effective for the Coronas, and a scientific reason that COVID might impact minorities more than caucasians (it involves Vit D levels and melanin). Dr Patrick is an excellent researcher and she lays out the studies. She not political. Joe just keeps asking why we aren’t hearing more about this.

They seem to be a bit different that other plant foods from a nutritional standpoint.

Also, I wonder. Was the D2 from the mushrooms isolated? Or was it powder from mushrooms that contained 2000 IU of D2 and possibly other forms of vitamin D?

20 minutes in the sun while wearing shorts & a t-shirt, 3 times a week from March through October will give your body all the Vitamin D it needs year round. That way is better for you than the pills, but the pills are OK if you carefully watch your dose. Too much D in pill form is toxic.

How? The D3 specific supplements have only 1/5th of the recommended, and 1/10th if you are elderly.

Taking a multivitamin a day is so freaking cheap and easy...everyone should do it

In other words, eat right and get a lot of naturally clean air and sunshine, then eat a little more of vitamin-rich D and C foods in flu season.
