But really, who watches all the way to the end of Godfather II? That's why the story had legs for a weekend.

I would imagine there's some overt antisemitism coming from characters from a 70's mafia movie.

35

The characters in the Godfather were based on real people. One would think Goldberg would understand that.

Weren't they in a mob war with the Jewish mafia, run by whoever Lee Strasberg played? (Only saw it once.)

2
Chuck_Nutmeat 2 points ago +2 / -0

I was just reminded of a movie I've seen that was so over-the-top racist against Chinese people, it was hilarious. I can't remember the name of it, but it was a John Wayne movie set in Hawaii.

2
Chuck_Nutmeat 2 points ago +2 / -0

Yeah, of course. Mafia people are probably racist as shit, and should be depicted realistically.

It’s from the sequel. And while Sonny and Tessio died in the first movie, the second movie ends with a flashback to the family dinner that happened just after Michael enlisted, even before the start of the first movie. Indeed, it’s this scene that provides the lines that Goldberg and/or his sources “allegedly” cribbed.

quick fact check: around the middle of this bizarre ending scene, the head of the table off-handedly says that only a "sad sap" would die for their country. it was used as foreshadowing to mikey admitting that he'd enlisted in the marines- causing an implied rift between him and the other cosa nostra bros—maybe even his own dad. at no point were war dead called "losers," but it was overtly stated that they should rather die for the family business- for "blood-" than while serving in the armed forces. this is a very strange take

thank you for coming to my ted talk. check for yourself:

fair enough, but then "lifted" isn't the right word. "loosely borrowed" or "was conceivably inspired by" fit much better, and they're even digestable for people somewhere in the middle

Someone posted Goldberg said on Facebook that maybe those quotes, allegedly from Trump. weren't actually spoken. Oh, so now the FAKE NEWS purveyors can read minds. Seems like they would be more successful as Mediums than "journalists", if they can quote people's thoughts.

Medium is right. Corporate Journalism is not rare and is never well done.

2
Horkers4Trump 2 points ago +2 / -0

"Sources familiar with the president's thinking" is a dried out used up meme at this point, so fake news has been reading minds for as long as Trump has been a political figure.

13
AngelMark 13 points ago +13 / -0

Oh because Pres Trump called Cuomo Fredo, Goldy decided to take some lines from the Godfather?

16
sentient-potato 16 points ago +16 / -0

Here's a threader link to how often Goldberg uses the Godfather. The man is obsessed and seems to write stories to fit into his Godfather narrative, not the other way around.

9

"But according to sources with knowledge of this visit, Trump, while standing by Robert Kelly’s grave, turned directly to his father and said, “I don’t get it. What was in it for them?” Kelly (who declined to comment for this story)"

Whole story:https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2020/09/trump-americans-who-died-at-war-are-losers-and-suckers/615997/

Not a line for line quote or even close, but the sentiment matches and fits with the author's Godfather obessions which is well established.

4
Heavens2MAGAtroid 4 points ago +4 / -0

"I don’t get it. What was in it for them?" That statement isn't even an insult, It can be an expression of wonder about their sacrifice.

2
Maenard 2 points ago +2 / -0

Also, bringing troops home means he doesnt want them dying in pointless wars. Troops being killed "for freedon" isnt the same as troops being killed "to protect a shithole of people who hate us."

This alleged statement is so ambiguous without context it is a wonder that they... wait... scratch that. It's EXACTLY why they would use it.

6
Freedombunker 6 points ago +6 / -0

Quoting a gangster/organized crime family? Well they are the heroes of the Left/DNC. They laugh and make fun of working people with honor, doing the jobs that they would never do, for a paycheck that is appropriate to their efforts.

Leftists are always looking for a scam or angle, to get exorbitant for nearly zero effort. (See CNN "journalists" and $250,000 a year PLUS full benefits Bureaucrats and lobbyists in D.C. and Northern Virginia)

"What do you do in D.C.?"

Collect a fat paycheck... for existing.

2
Strategerium 2 points ago +2 / -0

So far, the left will consider:

  • Anytime a female activist/politician does something = Star Wars/Harry Potter/Wonder Woman

  • Anytime a politician on the right does something, especially as a family = Godfather

  • Anytime a military action they did not approve = Lord of the Rings, but careful about that casual anti-orc racism!

  • Anytime some protest/riot/revolution they approve = Les Mis

  • Rules for thee, not for me = Animal Farm only up to the point where the animal take over, didn't read the rest.

3
IvIA6A 3 points ago +3 / -0

That sentiment seems pretty close to the fake quote attributed to Trump. A responsible outlet would say "hey we're not going to run something like this unless we can verify the source". But that was like 30 years ago when there was still integrity in media and politics, when plagerism was serious enough to cause someone to quit the race.

4
OhLollyLollyPop 4 points ago +4 / -0

All of this became acceptable with Woodward and Bernstein's Deep Throat unnamed source. Since then, it's become widely used for fake news/propaganda.

2
GeneticsGuy 2 points ago +2 / -0

It's also highly suspect as this author is obsessed with the Godfather series and many of his writings reference it.
