I think everyone has an experience where they knew something obvious that the teacher didn't. Its because teachers aren't that smart. They are taught about child psychology and making lesson plans, not actual science and math and critical thinking.

I still remember my 7th grade biology teacher insisting that "blood is blue inside your body and only turns red when exposed to air, that's why your veins are blue."

I remember when my 5th grade teacher insisted that a 6 mi by 6 mi square was 6 square miles and got mad at me when I said it wasn't.
