The mouth is a bunch of teeth (similar material to fingernails) surrounded by muscles and nerves (similar to the layers just below your skin), with the tongue (a bigger muscle with taste buds as well as nerves) helping to guide everything along.

Without our lips to seal it shut, our mouths wouldn't even be able to seal themselves off from the elements.
