Dems (and the GOP) can nominate anyone they want to, up until Election day, but they won't show up on the ballots in the states. Ballots are being printed and sent out, as of now, a last minute switch would be unthinkable. Even from the whackdoodle Dems.

If they ran their radicals and Trump trounced them and the American People roundly rejected them, then it suggests that the moderate Democrats are right to reject the radicals from their party. But if instead they run an old straight white man and a career cop, if Trump trounces them, what is the message for 2024? That the Democrats need to turn even more vicious against straight people, against white people, against men, and against cops. It is a way for them to create the illusion that there is some mandate for communism. In a way, though not as intentionally, something like this happened with the milquetoast Romney-Ryan ticket.
