I don't know what your skill set it, but I have had alot of recent success on upwork. Close to making an additional 500 a week, maybe worth a look.

CAD drafting work mostly.

Can vouch, I've hired a lot of freelancers on upwork and a few of them I kept on as contractors for multiple years. I've hired everything from graphic designers to developers to VAs... It's great!

It's like uber for professional jobs. There's a lot of slave wage tier gigs, but some good ones as well. I hired some people on there for small jobs I was having trouble with and generally it went fine. For example, if you need a script to automate something at work but you don't know how to code, you can find people that can usually solve it for you with only a few hours of work.

I gave one of the guys a recommendation on his application to our company because he did such a good job on something I needed. As far as the talent pool goes, there's a lot of bottom of the barrel type people looking for work as well as companies wanting top dollar work for bottom dollar pricing. There's also a lot of South Americans and Eastern Europeans that can be very good and reasonably cheap, but I think there's still a place to make decent beer money.

I've been on both sides of it, and generally have had good experiences with small odd-jobs. As a worker, it's easy to get yourself sucked into a project where you're making $2/hour, so you just have to avoid those and wait for better customers. As someone looking for people to do something, you can review their past work and I've found that the better their English is, the better the results. Sometimes you'll find foreign programmers willing to work for peanuts, but they invariably misunderstand what you want and it won't turn out well.

Some examples of bad jobs I've seen: "Please design and build a website for me for selling X product in Y country. Pay is $200." "Please compose and write a song for me in X foreign language based around some 16th century battle." "I need data extracted from this text file and converted to a single .csv file of data, but there's no clear delimiters and the structure varies by page. Also, each file is about 500 pages. I don't really understand the mechanism by which these files are created, but please figure it out for me so I can save a lot of time on manual data entry"

Some good examples: "I need this 30 page slide deck translated by tomorrow evening for $500" "I need an alteryx workflow to map sensor data to human understandable location names, compare that against my inventory, and tell me what's in the wrong location / missing. The data is structured and here are examples of each data source."

Very interesting! Thanks for the detailed reply. I do design work in oil and gas and my hours have been cut a lot lately, thought it might be something interesting to try on the side. Unfortunately, I know I wouldn't even be able to charge 10% of my current billing rate, I imagine somebodys always going to be undercutting you? Anywho, thanks again, Ill go check it out.

1
lanre 1 point ago +1 / -0

I mean, to an extent, yeah. But it's the typical situation you probably find anywhere. There are businesses that don't want quality, and they're never going to pay for it. And there are businesses that do want quality, and will pay for it. Or they're behind on a deadline due to someone else's screw-up and just need something fixed.

I never found it a consistent source of income, but it was good for beer money while in school.

Brickwell 74 points ago +74 / -0

I was laid off during the Obama years. Got so lean I had to sell off most of my possessions which were worth anything including my antique truck. Point is, when Trump began fixing things I got a job far better than the one I lost and am now doing well. (Still miss my truck though). Don't give up hope. In the Trump economy good things are always on the horizon.

33
masterdrake [S] 33 points ago +33 / -0

Florida unemployment is minuscule and about to run out for us, not that i have a problem with that, id rather have lower taxes and lower unemployment...but right now we are pretty screwed

24
empiretc 24 points ago +24 / -0

Yeah, had to convince friends to have the taxes held out of their unemployment even though they didn't want to. Had to explain how it worked. Since the $600 ran out, they are feeling the squeeze. They were hoping that $400 would kick in, but as it turns out, it is actually only $300. That is putting most of them on a very tight budget each month. These guys used to work in the oilfield and were making killer money...

8

What part of Florida? It's always been difficult finding and maintaining work in the state because of in-country immigration of labor.

I hear you can weather things better further north, and many of my peers found their first jobs in Atlanta or the Carolinas despite being Florida natives.

14
masterdrake [S] 14 points ago +14 / -0

DeadOverRed 4 points ago +4 / -0

I've spent my entire adult life trying to get to Florida, and my wife had to leave to get a job. There aren't a lot of jobs there! How's your knowledge of aerospace engieneering? :)

4
PeaceThroughStrength 4 points ago +4 / -0

Not well, I'm in the DC area and all the NASA folks I know are here. I don't know the folks at Space Coast very well but from what I hear all the hiring is still run through DC.

Not sure where Bezos' outfit does their hiring but I don't think it's through Florida.

1
DeadOverRed 1 point ago +1 / -0

Thai massage?

2
PeaceThroughStrength 2 points ago +2 / -0

Sorry, I'm not sure what you mean.

You asked about Aerospace engineering and I stated all the folks I know are in NASA and unfortunately the hiring for NASA even for the Space Coast locations were all done through their offices in DC and MD.

It's about the same for all plane design work - you'll need to join me in the DC-MD-VA area, and I say that because all the "private" aerospace I know work for Raytheon, GM, etc. designing weapons.

3
DeadOverRed 3 points ago +3 / -0

I was just suggesting fields that are big in Florida. :) Who cares where they hire from if they have an office in FL?

5
Phins360_FL 5 points ago +6 / -1

DeSantis is pissing me off. He can end this bull shit in our state yesterday. however he chooses not to. Go figure.

We need to open up our hotels, travel and leisure industries here. I have many friends in that industry and they are all getting pink slips. This is for no good reason other than one fucking gigantic national virtue signal over a cold bug.

3 things I want you to do: 1)write a letter to President Trump. Honestly and succinctly explain your situation; 2)Reach out to friends and network yourself. Lots of jobs here in FL, just have to be connected to them; and 3)Have faith my friend. This too shall pass. You'll be better for it on the other side. I've been there, down that and got the t-shirt.

Central Florida. Tourism is dead, Hospitality is dead, Restaurants are dead, Hotels are dead. Its very bad here, and unemployment is pitiful, though our taxes are low so I am fine with low unemployment honestly. its just theres thousands of people laid off and no one is hiring

12
Snugmeatsocks 12 points ago +12 / -0

8
booblitchutz 8 points ago +8 / -0

No question I'll be voting for Trump.

But I have to say, I'm supremely disappointed in the "republican" Governor of Texas who reflexively shut down the state way too early on and triggered the avalanche of states shutting down and ruining the economy.

Abbott opened up the state again, but then shut partially down and enacted a weak ass "mask mandate" and didn't say a WORD about mass protests and illegals pouring over the border.

He still refuses to stand up against the persistent "case count" bullshit.

It all traces back to his failed weak leadership though. He could have held firm, but he was too weak.

7
OhLollyLollyPop 7 points ago +7 / -0

I agree. I am very disappointed in him. I hope he gets a Republican challenger next election. Where I live, most places aren't abiding by the 50% restaurant rule. There are hardly any bars, but they are starting to sell food so they can open. Business is pretty good otherwise, it seems. New Craftsman factory, thousands of houses being built.

3
booblitchutz 3 points ago +3 / -0

I doubt VERY seriously Abbott will run for a third term. Most Texas Governors bow out after two terms. Perry was the exception.

But if he DID try to run, he'd get primaried no question. Texas GOP is in a bit of a state of upheaval right now, thanks to the Trump revolution vs the "old GOP". Dinosaurs like Abbott are displeased.

I don't doubt that Abbott is fundamentally on the right side of most issues, I just think he is happier playing along than bucking the media and big city power brokers. He could have held firm on not closing Texas, but no he was too afraid of being called mean things. He could have held firm on re-opening, but nope again too afraid.

His moronic mask mandate was a weak capitulation to the judges of the big counties - rather than forcing a legal showdown (which they would have LOST) in the TX Supreme Court ruling the county mask mandates invalid, no, he launched his own stupid mask mandate state wide.

Don't get me fucking started on Abbott!

2

300 plus million in Texas tax dollars going to a contract tracing company based in Rochester, NY.

Posted about it back in June, maybe 10 upvotes and not a peep even in alternative new sources.

He's been compromised or made a decision "politically" or good "optics".

I have other information, but nothing but speculation - so won't say anything more.

We_Are_Inevitable 8 points ago +8 / -0

I am as angry as you are. I can only suggest trying something like DoorDash (even though they are a fucked up "woke" company). I've made 1k+ a week sometimes. I wouldn't bother with Lyft and Uber/Passenger driving, you make 3x more delivering food then people, at least in my area, and don't have to worry about the stranger barfing/fucking up your car factor. I wish you the best. Democrats have caused untold suffering over this COVID hoax.

This also just happened to me. My (former) employer furloughed me in March and officially laid me off in late August. They also raised their minimum wage to 15 bucks across the board for those “lucky” enough to stay employed and wear masks all day.

I don’t know what my future holds, but I do know that it does not involve ever working for a China-balls sucking, American-hating mega corporation with a billionaire cunt CEO ever again.

What’s your skill set? My company is hiring remote workers for low level reporting on financial stuff for insurance carriers. Work from home and flexible schedules.

6
SharkTeamTrump 6 points ago +6 / -0

Construction, home improvement companies seem to be doing fine.

My wife's company (home improvement) was forced to shutdown and layoff people like everyone else, but once they opened back up, business has been through the roof (pardon the pun).

They called everyone back to work, but many declined saying they were making more on unemployment. They're really struggling to hire people. Even still, sales are way up and the work queue is long.

I'd say almost anything in home improvement/repair/construction would do well. If you have ANY skills in sales, design, customer service, installation or trades like construction, plumbing, electrical, etc. look up companies doing doors, windows, kitchens, roofing, remodeling, etc. They all seem to be hiring, and many will train.
