The gap will close as the election nears, not because sentiment has changed, but the pollsters want to be able to point to their last polls before the election as being somewhat accurate, just so they can maintain their mirage of respectability.

What usually changes: polling likely voters instead of registered voters.

The dishonest pollsters will start to adjust their weighting to reflect party ID, instead of oversampling Democrats.
